Exploring Life & Business with Anne-Marie McCormack of McCormack Realty & Renters Choice Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne-Marie McCormack.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I never planned to work in real estate. When I moved to Florida in 1991, I was new to the area and simply looking for work. The only opportunity that opened its door was in vacation rentals — and quite by accident, that’s where my journey began.

It didn’t take long to see beneath the sunshine and smiles. Behind the scenes, I noticed owners feeling disconnected, properties being poorly cared for, and a lack of genuine communication. Something about it didn’t sit right with me. Real estate, I realised, was missing heart.

By 1994, I knew I wanted to do things differently. I started my own property management company with a simple intention: to treat people, homes, and investments with honesty, respect, and care. Not as numbers. Not as transactions. But as something deeply personal.

Over time, I also came to understand that vacation rentals weren’t where my heart truly belonged. In 2004, I decided to step away from that side of the industry and focus entirely on long-term rentals and property sales for investors — people who wanted stability, guidance, and someone they could genuinely trust to protect what they’d worked so hard to build.

What began as an accidental job became a lifelong calling. Today, everything I do is still rooted in those early lessons: people first, integrity always, and service that goes far beyond the keys.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a business while raising children is not for the faint-hearted. As a mother with school-age children, I was balancing far more than most people ever saw — running a full-time property management company while also holding a home together, showing up for my family, and carrying the invisible mental load that so many women know all too well.

There were days when the juggle felt impossible. Yet I learned that strength doesn’t come from doing everything perfectly — it comes from staying present, adaptable, and true to your values, even when the pressure is high.

Growing the business meant finding the right people, setting clear boundaries, and learning when to say no. I never wanted growth at the expense of my well-being or my integrity. I wasn’t chasing millions or competing in a space that often rewards burnout. My goal was always control — not power — control over how I worked, how I lived, and how responsibly I cared for others’ investments.

As the industry changed, large investment firms began buying up homes, often underestimating the heart, experience, and human understanding required to manage them well. I watched as inexperienced teams struggled to keep up with an evolving market, and it only reinforced what I had always believed: property management is not about scale — it’s about stewardship.

For me, this journey has been about proving that you can lead with strength and compassion. That you can build something meaningful without losing yourself in the process. And that women don’t have to choose between family, integrity, and success — we can create all three on our own terms.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
McCormack Realty and Renters Choice Homes were built on a simple belief: property management should feel personal, not corporate. We are a boutique, family-run company offering sensible, honest solutions for owners who invested in homes in our area — many of whom discovered that the dream didn’t quite turn out the way they expected.

For some, that dream of owning a home in the sunshine became stressful, overwhelming, or financially draining. We understand that journey, and we’re here to help make sense of it again. Our role is to bring clarity, stability, and realistic guidance, so your investment works for you — not against you.

What sets us apart is how we work. We stay intentionally hands-on, managing a carefully selected portfolio so every property receives genuine attention. Our owners know they can still pick up the phone and speak to someone who knows their property, understands their concerns, and genuinely cares.

Our tenants are local, and our owners come from all over — many with dreams of retiring to the Sunshine State one day. We bridge that distance through trust, communication, and experience, ensuring both sides feel supported and respected.

At McCormack Realty and Renters Choice Homes, we don’t chase volume or empty promises. We offer thoughtful management, steady guidance, and a partnership built on honesty, care, and long-term success.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Over the years, one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that successful property management begins long before a lease is signed. Careful screening — of both owners and tenants — is essential. When expectations are clear and realistic from the start, everything else flows more smoothly.

The most successful relationships are built when owners genuinely want their investment cared for to a high standard, and tenants want to live in a home they respect and treat as their own. When both sides are aligned, homes thrive, communication improves, and stress disappears for everyone involved.

I’ve also learned that not every property — or every situation — is the right fit. Saying no can be just as important as saying yes. Protecting the integrity of a home, the wellbeing of tenants, and the trust of owners sometimes means guiding people toward realistic expectations rather than quick promises.

Another challenge has been helping owners navigate the emotional side of investment ownership. Many purchased homes with dreams of retirement, financial freedom, or a future chapter in the Sunshine State. When those dreams meet the realities of maintenance, market shifts, or distance, it can be overwhelming. My role has often been to bring clarity, reassurance, and sensible solutions when things feel uncertain.

I’ve also seen firsthand how much the industry has changed. Rising costs, evolving regulations, and increased pressure on both landlords and tenants have made property management more complex than ever. It’s taught me that experience, adaptability, and clear communication are no longer optional — they’re essential.

Through it all, one belief has remained constant: the best outcomes happen when people feel heard, respected, and supported. Property management isn’t just about homes — it’s about people, trust, and long-term relationships built with care.
