Exploring Life & Business with Collin Buschor of Buschor’s Baits

Today we’d like to introduce you to Collin Buschor.

Hi Collin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I was 13 I started bass fishing with my dad and we were spending a lot of money on bait and tackle. So when I was 14 years old, I asked my mom if I could start working like my sister because I wanted to earn some money. My mom suggested I start a business that I could do from home as a part of my homeschooling. We talked about some ideas and I had been watching YouTube videos on bait making. It gave me the idea to start my own business of making bait. I did a lot of research with my dad on what I would need. My parents loaned me the money to get started. I started in June of 2023 and I got 4 different bait molds and ordered some colorant and flake. I created some custom colors by blending the colorants together. My mom made me fish with the bait I made to make sure they worked before I started selling them. Once I knew they caught bass, I started a Buschor’s Baits Facebook and Instagram page to show my baits and bass I was catching on them. I had some men from my church that supported me right away and it helped me a lot. I started going to Farmer’s Markets and any local tournaments that would let me set up my tent with baits. I was able to start making some money to pay off my loan from my parents and then reinvest to buy more bait molds and grow my bait options I can offer. I now have 18 different baits I can make and 65 bait molds. My baits are unique because I can create my own colors, I can recreate custom colors that other companies have discontinued and I use quality plastisol that holds up well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been really surprised at how much the community has supported me and my business. It wasn’t what I expected and I stay really busy with custom bait orders. I also have to keep my Facebook and Instagram page going with several posts a day and that requires a lot of work coming up with content to post. I take a lot of pictures and videos of my work to make social media posts. It’s been a lot more work than I realized it would be.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I specialize in making soft plastic fishing baits. I use a high quality plastisol and create unique fishing bait colors. I can blend colorants together to make my own colors and I can take my customer’s requests of colors and glitter to make their ideas become a fishing bait they can use. I also can color match old bait colors that customers can no longer find at the stores. I have a lot of repeat customers that like a certain color I make or like knowing I can create what they need.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
In my downtime I like reading my Bible and going to my youth group at church. I just got back from a trip to Europe as a part of Student Leadership University where we followed in the steps of C.S. Lewis. It was really neat to see where he walked and how he was inspired for his books.
