Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Paternoster.
Hi Donna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began in the mortgage industry over 25 years ago, where I built a career helping families achieve the dream of homeownership. Throughout the years, I developed a passion for serving others, guiding clients through one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.
Life took an unexpected turn when I lost my only daughter, Nicole, to mental illness and suicide. I adopted my granddaugther Ellie (at the time she was 11 years old). That loss changed me forever, but it also inspired me to create something meaningful in Nicole’s honor. Through my own healing journey, I discovered the transformative power of movement, wellness, and community.
In 2025, I founded Pilafly Pilates Studio, a place designed to help people build strength not only in their bodies but also in their minds and spirits. What started as a dream has grown into multiple studio locations and a supportive community focused on wellness, resilience, and connection.
Today, I continue to serve my clients as a Senior Loan Officer with AmeriBest Mortgage while also leading Pilafly Pilates Studio. Although they are very different businesses, both are rooted in the same mission: helping people build stronger futures, whether through homeownership, health, or personal transformation.
Looking back, every challenge and every success has reinforced one belief: when we help people find strength, confidence, and hope, incredible things can happen. That’s the heart behind everything I do.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of challenges, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty.
In the mortgage industry, I’ve navigated market crashes, rising interest rates, changing regulations, and the ups and downs that come with helping people through major life decisions. Building a career over the past 25 years required persistence, adaptability, and a commitment to always putting clients first.
Personally, my greatest challenge was losing my daughter, Nicole, to mental illness and suicide. That experience changed my life forever. Grief is something you never truly get over, but you learn how to carry it. There were days when simply moving forward felt overwhelming.
When I decided to open Pilafly Pilates Studio, I was entering an entirely new industry. Like any startup, there were challenges with financing, finding the right locations, building a team, attracting clients, and learning the many aspects of running a wellness business. There were moments when things didn’t go as planned, but I stayed focused on the mission behind it all.
What has carried me through every challenge is my belief in helping people. Whether I’m helping someone buy a home or helping someone find strength and confidence through movement, purpose has always been my motivation. The struggles have shaped who I am today and have taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of never giving up on a dream.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am proud to lead two businesses that, while very different on the surface, share the same purpose: helping people build stronger, more confident futures.
As a Senior Loan Officer with AmeriBest Mortgage, I have spent more than 25 years helping individuals and families achieve homeownership. I am licensed throughout the State of Florida and specialize in VA, FHA, Conventional, and first-time homebuyer financing. I am known for being accessible, responsive, and committed to finding solutions—even in challenging situations. What sets me apart is that I treat every client like family. For me, it’s never just about closing a loan; it’s about building relationships, educating clients, and helping them make informed financial decisions with confidence.
I am also the founder of Pilafly Pilates Studio, a wellness-focused Pilates community with locations in Satellite Beach and Melbourne, Florida. Pilafly was inspired by my daughter Nicole’s memory and my passion for mental health awareness, making our mission about much more than fitness alone. Through movement, connection, and community, we strive to create a space where people can heal, grow, and rediscover their strength.
We offer reformer Pilates classes for all fitness levels in an encouraging, welcoming environment where everyone feels supported. What sets Pilafly apart is our focus on connection, community, and overall well-being. We believe fitness should be empowering, not intimidating. Our mission is to help people improve their physical strength, reduce stress, build confidence, and feel a true sense of belonging.
What I am most proud of is the impact both businesses have on people’s lives. Whether I’m helping a family secure financing for their dream home or watching a client discover strength they didn’t know they had, those moments are incredibly rewarding. At the heart of both brands is a simple belief: when people feel supported, empowered, and cared for, amazing things can happen.
I want readers to know that both AmeriBest Mortgage and Pilafly Pilates are built on service, integrity, and genuine care for the people we serve. Success, to me, isn’t measured by transactions or memberships—it’s measured by the lives we touch along the way.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson has been that resilience isn’t about avoiding challenges—it’s about continuing to move forward through them.
Over the years, I’ve built two businesses, helped hundreds of families achieve homeownership, and created a wellness community through Pilafly. Along the way, I’ve experienced both incredible successes and profound personal loss. Those experiences taught me that people are stronger than they realize and that purpose can grow from even the most difficult circumstances.
Whether I’m helping someone finance their dream home or guiding them through a Pilates class, I’ve learned that showing up consistently, leading with compassion, and focusing on helping others creates the greatest impact. Success isn’t just measured by achievements—it’s measured by the lives you touch along the way.
That lesson continues to guide everything I do, both personally and professionally.
