Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Todd
Hi Justin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
At 5 years old, I started playing Sonic the Hedgehog games on my Sega Genesis. On my 6th birthday in 1995, while looking for Transformers toys at Toys R Us, my mom happened to find a Sonic comic book. She bought it for me. From there on, I found more comics, McDonald’s toys, got early access to the internet & Ebay, and it just snowballed from there.
Today, 30 years later, I’ve traveled the world, meeting fellow Sonic fans all over the globe, and now have one of the largest Sonic collections! Voice actors and Sega staff have even come to my home to see the collection!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road for the most part, as I was growing up, friends and adults alike didn’t understand collecting and why I didn’t open any of my stuff. But I got more enjoyment out of displaying it than playing with it!
We’ve been impressed with Treasure Hunting Sonic, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2016, I started going by “Treasure Hunting Sonic” on my social media platforms. This allowed me to showcase my collection away from my personal life, and make it sort of a business, Through my socials, I’ve become a full on influencer. Not only have I started getting paid to post my Sonic treasures, not to mention all the cool merch I get sent to review! Fellow fans & collectors have also reached out if they come across an item they know I’ve been looking for, giving me connections to get region exclusive merch
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve been VERY lucky! Wether it be opening the EBay app at the right time at 1AM and finding a one of a kind item listed, or walking into a store & being given one of their display pieces, luck has played a big part!
