Exploring Life & Business with Kara Mitchell of Social Bird Events

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Mitchell.

Kara Mitchell

Hi Kara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved planning events for friends and family—bridal showers, engagement parties, weddings, birthdays—you name it. I was planning it for fun for 10+ years. I was the real-life Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses, always the bridesmaid or maid-of-honor, and joking that my friends only picked me so I would plan their parties! When I became a mom, I realized I wanted a pivot in my career that allowed me to cater to families and run my own business. Being an event planner felt far fetched – but I wanted to test it out. After a few “test-parties”, Social Bird Events was born and and grew faster than I could have imagined.

With a background in fashion design and an entrepreneurial heart, I’ve always been driven by creativity. Now, I channel that energy into Social Bird, turning events into memorable, stress-free celebrations.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running your own business is rarely a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been letting go of the idea of a traditional corporate job with benefits and the ability to clock out at 5 and truly “turn it off.” Instead, I’ve embraced a lifestyle where I’m working weekends, available to clients 24/7, and juggling all the behind-the-scenes details that come with running Social Bird. Wearing all of the hats is not just about putting together a pretty day! It’s a constant sacrifice, but it’s a choice I’ve made to build something meaningful for both myself and my family.

At the same time, this path has given me the flexibility to adjust my schedule and carve out quality time with my daughter and family. It’s important to me to show my daughter that hard work and sacrifice can be worth it when you’re doing something that feeds your soul and provides for the people you love. It’s not always easy, but my three year old being equally as excited about “Mom’s Parties” —makes it all worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We create experiences that feel effortless yet unforgettable. We’re all about taking your vision and expanding on it to give you something better than you could have ever imagined. We don’t aim for “Pinterest-perfect”; we strive for YOUR perfect. We’re here to bring something fresh to the table—something you haven’t already seen a million times on Instagram. We bring creative concepts to full execution, and we handle it all so you can focus on what matters most—enjoying the moment.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always the creative type who loved going against the grain. If there was an expectation for a project, I couldn’t resist leveling it up and adding a surprise factor to make it stand out. I was constantly creating and hustling—entrepreneurship has been in my blood for as long as I can remember!

In middle school, I sewed buttons and colorful threads onto plain jeans and sold them to classmates. By high school, I had a custom headband business (this was the Blair Waldorf era, so headbands were everything). I planned my very first bridal shower at 18 for my best friend, and that’s when the spark for event planning really ignited.

Looking back, it’s no surprise I ended up here. I’ve always loved finding ways to add a little magic to the ordinary and bringing joy to people through creativity.
