Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Richardson
Hi Kat, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a collegiate athlete. When I entered school I was a business major. Through my athletics I found my passion for the human body and how it worked. I started seeing a chiropractor and was fascinated with the body’s ability to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery in most cases.
While in chiropractic school I experienced some hormonal issues with stress and a genetic disorder. I saw many doctors that wanted to push anti-depressants and birth control for my cycle issues. It was an acupuncturist that truly delved deep into the root cause of my issues and it was then I found my passion for acupuncture, Chinese medicine and women’s health. I now specialize in women’s health and fertility through holistic medicine.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not. I feel as though the bumps make the journey worth while. Many times I lost my passion, I lost faith in our healthcare system. I kept pushing. I loved natural medicine. I knew there was a way to not just cure people, but heal people from within. Unfortunately what’s common is not always normal. With that motto I was able go into each day with the disposition that if I give one desperate patient a glimmer of hope when so many others had diminished their symptoms, than I was fulfilled.
We’ve been impressed with Malabar Chiropractic Acupuncture and Herbs , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As I stated before I special in natural healing.
I am a Doctor of chiropractic where I treat a wide variety of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. I treat anyone from athletes, families and geriatric populations, car accident victims and anyone who wants to keep their body functioning optimally.
I and also a Certified Clinical Master Herbalist and Acupuncture Physician. This scope is much broader. My treatment ranges to practically any disorder. Some common ones I treat are heart disorders, hormonal disorders, pain, emotional distress, and all things associated with homeostatic imbalance. I had a patient call me a “good witch” one time. Than several a “witch doctor”, “a sorceress”. I did not take offense. Instead, I considered that historically speaking, people feared female pioneers in the healthcare system. While they are apprehensive, they still trusted me with their care. Thus, “Doctor Sorceress” was the brand that kind of adopted me. Fear of the unknown but their bodies being capable of healing itself with a little holistic “magic”, needles, plants, simplicity and ancient wisdom .
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have the best parents. I know everyone thinks that but my parents truly are in my opinion. They were both educators from humble backgrounds. My dad recently retired after 38 years in the school system, while my mom still works in education. Growing up we couldn’t afford to take fancy vacations but they were the best vacations. I have 3 younger brothers so you can imagine most of these vacations consisted of the great outdoors. I learned to filet a fish and tie a fishing rig when I was 8 years old. I could start a fire, sleep under the stars and navigate a compass (mostly on the ocean). My parents always taught me the importance of the environment and how crucial it is that we preserve it. For example, we would go out and catch our dinner. Before we cleaned and cooked the fish we would paint it and make prints with rice paper. We would then display it as art. We would do so as an honor to the fish that fed our family. I feel as though these teachings have shown me how powerful the natural world around us is. In a world with everything at our fingertips, I value the simplicity in nutrients from the earth and I am grateful these childhood experiences have allowed me to use this everyday in my career.
