Exploring Life & Business with Liz Mbwambo of The LMB Marketing Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Mbwambo

Hi Liz, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have worked in marketing for a little over 12 years but typically on the “seller side” or in some “corporate structure.” From selling SEO, SEM, websites, media etc. Overtime the structure of corporate got exhausting. Unfortunately corporate has to answer to board members, and they have quotas to meet, I get it, it’s part of it. However, I was unhappy. I am naturally a nurturing person, so not being able to do what is in the best interest of the customer was like asking a fish to walk. It is against my nature.

One day I jokingly said to my husband “I have been doing this for so long, I know the ins and the outs, I can have my own marketing agency and be able to properly serve my clients”. He responded to me (very serious) “You absolutely can.” From there the thought kept growing. I said it again to a few friends, and they all said “you can!” From there, I realized the thought was not so crazy. I did research and found ways to get it done at the speed of cash without seeking investors or partners. I quit my corporate job and have not looked back.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road ever worth walking is ever smooth. Taking my household from a dual income, to just my husband’s income for a while was extremely heart wrenching. No matter how many times I ran a mock budget the fear was massive. Did I do bad math on this budget? What if he gets laid off? What if I set my family up for failure?

The mental and emotional struggle is what kept me going back and forth on making the decision. I prayed a lot and somehow had peace every single time I thought of the decision.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned many things, I will have to narrow it down to the top two….You have to be passionate! However everyone throws the word passion around very easily. The word “passion” comes from the Latin word passio, which comes from the verb patior, meaning “to suffer, endure, resign”. If you are not willing to suffer or endure the hardship that comes with your passion, it is not your passion.

Secondly, regardless of your faith, I am a person of faith. I believe God puts ideas in our hearts and minds. He is the ultimate creator, so why not give us ideas to create? Just start. Start with writing things down. Start with research. Start with finding a mentor. Start somewhere, but just start.
