Exploring Life & Business with Meghan O’Brien of Anson Manor Bakehouse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan O’Brien.

Hi Meghan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Back in 2020 I suffered quite a few hard loses. I really needed an outlet for grief and stress and everything I tried just wasn’t working for me. I’ve always enjoyed baking and one day during my grief a friend invited me to a little get together. I didn’t want to show up empty handed so I made a few cookies. While everyone at the party enjoyed the cookies, I realized baking was exactly what I needed to help deal with what I had going on in my life. So, I picked up a whisk and basically never put it down. I began experimenting with different types of baked goods, from fresh yeast breads to donuts to cupcakes and everything in between. I started an Instagram account to document my personal baking journey and brought in snacks weekly to my coworkers and friends. Before I knew it people were asking me to bake them cakes, cupcakes, and other assorted themed items. I’ve loved every step of this learning/baking journey and I’m so thankful for the encouragement from those around me. In just a short time Anson Manor Bakehouse has grown tremendously all while helping me get back to my old self.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anson Manor Bakehouse was never meant to be a small business. It was just there to help me get through a rough time and I was extremely hesitant to move forward and take orders. My fear was that I was so passionate about something I didn’t want it to turn into a job. I’ve taken very small strides to get out of my comfort zone and take orders for those around me. Their encouragement has made me realize I can move forward with my passion all while growing it into a small business.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Anson Manor Bakehouse?
Anson Manor Bakehouse is a small cottage bakery where I produce fresh homemade baked goods. My most favorite items to bake are my cookies. Anything from chocolate chip, coffee cake, or Nutella filled cookies. I love experimenting with different cookie recipes, there are so many different possibilities. I think most people take cookies for granted, going straight to cakes and cupcakes but really cookies have so much to offer. They’re an unexpected treat at a party, are easy to eat, and can have fun combinations of flavors. While Anson Manor is still small and not necessarily a household name yet, I think down the road it will be my cookies that really sets us apart.

What does success mean to you?
I think there are so many different definitions of success, but I find business success to be waking up every morning excited to do something you love all while being fortunate to help support your family with that passion.
