Exploring Life & Business with Richard Dixon of Highlander Tattoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Dixon.

Richard, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got started with tattooing in prison.

People found out I could draw and insisted I learn to tattoo. I worked as a machinist for 27 years before losing my job. I started the business in my apartment with just a sign on the patio. When the state law changed making it illegal to tattoo out of the house, I opened the shop.

The shop started small, with a couple of apprentices. From there, the business grew by word of mouth. In the first years, we were known for being the home of the $10.00 piercings.

From 2013 to now, I have expanded the shop not only in size but with 6 dedicated tattoo artists, 2 full-time piercers, a front desk, and a full complement of aftercare and Orlando’s largest inventory of body jewelry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a rough and windy road at times. The effort to find good, quality, and loyal employees have been the biggest challenge as well as keeping up with client demand.

We’ve been impressed with Highlander Tattoo, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is a sole proprietorship. I currently have 9 employees. What sets us apart from others is having exceptional artists, always having piercers at the shop with no appointments needed.

Our brand is offering quality work and piercings at an affordable price. Everyone at the shop works under the same premise.

I stated earlier about our full complement of aftercare and jewelry making our shop a true one-stop-shop for our clients, past and present.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would have to say, my wife. She has been my biggest supporter and cheerleader. And it would also have to be my clients that keep passing the word about the shop to friends and colleagues.

Pricing:

  • All piercings are $20.00 each and include basic jewelry
  • Tattoos start at $80.00
