Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Acosta
Hi Stephanie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was still in college when I heard about an opportunity to work a temporary job in medical simulation. I was studying fine art, was self taught in makeup artistry, and I always was intrigued by the simulation industry as my Dad had worked in simulation most of my life. I took a semester off, put in leave at my retail job and got to work making prosthetics for injury simulation at lab in Orlando. I met some very talented people who inspired and help me grow as an artist and when the gig came to end, I went back to school and my retail job.
Some time had passed and the company I had worked with, Moulage Sciences and Training (MST), was opening their own location and was looking to hire makeup artist/lab technicians. Since I was already familiar with the process and the products I got a part time job offer. I quit my retail job and continued with school. Eventually I was offered a full time position once I completed my college degree. I was promoted to COO and when our previous President left to pursue other opportunities I was offered that role.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were some struggles along the way, moulage is a very niche market and the competition is high. I also paid my way through college which meant I could only afford to go to school part-time or sometimes had to take a semester off so it took me 11 years to finished a 4 year degree. I don’t regret it though because I learned so much a long the way both on the job and in school and it allowed me to really focus and hone my skills. Plus I able to avoid massive debt.
We’ve been impressed with Moulage Sciences and Training, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Moulage is a French word for molding/casting but in simulation it is defined as the art of applying mock injuries for the purpose of simulating real-world experience for emergency medical training.
Moulage Sciences and Training specializes in wearable silicone prosthetics for injury simulation. We pride ourselves on realism and for making detailed, easy to use out of the back products for our customers. We also provide moulage training classes, moulage services, R&D and manufacturing. Our products can be used an human role players or on training mannequins. We also make severable wearable training kits such as our cricothyrotomy and needle decompression trainers.
Our customers range from nurses and doctors, to first responders and the military. Hearing how our products and services make training more realistic for customers and therefore help them to be better healthcare providers for real people is such a reward. To know what we do really makes a difference is very fulfilling.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Orlando! We’re such a melting pot of people and cultures. We’re so lucky in that we can find so many communities in our city of course every kind of cuisine! I especially love our Little Vietnam are in the Mills 50 area. Being half Vietnamese it’s always been nice to be able to visit the restaurants and markets in that area! I’m also half Cuban and of course there’s no shortage of Latin food around town either! There is always so much to do in the city from the theme parks to the local markets; how could anyone ever be bored in the City Beautiful?!
