Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Houser-Staskus.
Hi Toni, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first got into the hair business back in high school here in Orlando, FL. I loved doing my girlfriends’ hair and makeup before we’d head out to the disco clubs we always wanted to look our very best!
After graduation, I followed my passion to Woody’s Hair Styling Institute of Orlando, earning my cosmetology degree in the summer of 1981. From there, I dove right in working in independent salons, learning from amazing stylists, and soaking up everything I could to perfect my craft.
Later, I took on the corporate salon world reinventing myself as not just a stylist, but a salon manager and true business professional. Through it all, one thing never changed: my love for helping people look and feel their absolute best.
Every client who sits in my chair is my canvas. I take time to understand their lifestyle, their ideas, and how much time they want to spend on their hair before creating the perfect look. Seeing that smile after a transformation — that’s what it’s all about for me.
Owning my own salon has been a dream come true, but it’s the people who fill my chair that keep my creativity flowing every day. My clients are truly like family, and I’m so grateful to be their stylist of choice.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were some rough patches on the way up ladder. There were times when I felt like I was being stifled by my career & not many chances to prove that I had the intelligence to be a good leader as well as being the best hair colorist I could be. Hair classes & extra education in the Orlando area were hard to come by in the late 1980’s & early 1990’s. and was very expensive. There were some great educational opportunities when Premiere Hair Shows started coming to Orlando. So I signed up for extra cutting classes. hair color classes & the invention of Keratin hair smoothing ,taking those classes to be in the know of the latest & greatest trends. Later in the early 2000’s I started classes about hair extensions with the fusion method & bead method. The only way to move up consistently was to be more educated than the next stylist. I made a commitment to myself that I was always going to challenge myself to be better than I was yesterday. Setting goals & making time for my career put me on the path to success, but the difficulties along the way made me try harder & not give up my dream of owning my own hair salon & working for myself.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I had a lot of great mentors along the way to my success. My biggest & most supportive colleague was Linda Benedict God rest her soul. She always shared with me the best way to cut hair & formulate hair color early on in my career. Linda was a true inspiration in my life when it comes to hair. I feel grateful to have someone who let me be their shadow at work & pick her brain for ideas in making my clients look their absolute best. I also feel grateful for two of my bosses Patti Hall & Tammy Hoyt who noticed my work ethic & gave me an opportunity to manage other hair salons in the Orlando area, These are only a few people who have believed in me as well as my mother Carolyn who once said “You can be anything you want to be if you put your mind to it. ” That stuck with me my whole entire life of being a hairstylist. It’s great to have others believe in you as it propels you forward.
