Exploring Life & Business with William Boyle of Let It Roll Food

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Boyle.

Hi William, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been wanting to start my own business for over a decade, but I never knew WHAT I wanted to start. I have so many interests, and I just love to learn and grow. I decided in 2023 that I was just going to do something. A business partner floated the idea of Rolled Ice Cream. I had no idea what it was, so I researched it. I quickly denounced it and said that it was a fad on social media. He encouraged me to try it, so I did. I went to a local shop and tried the product. It was incredible. I had a short chat with the owner and learned that a lot of the products that they used were shipped in. I was convinced that if we did it completely from scratch, only fresh ingredients and no preservatives, then it would be some of the best ice cream around. We started a business together in South Carolina, and after a short period of time, I sold him my half and started it down here with my wife. We both have been in the hospitality industry our entire careers, so we did have a headstart on what to expect. We did dozens of iterations of every flavor that we have created and settled on incredible recipes with quality, homemade ingredients. Our one-year anniversary recently passed, and it is crazy how we got to where we are. In just twelve months, we have been part of over 20 private events: birthday parties, business events, student appreciation events, etc. This doesn’t even include our dozens of public events/festivals that we have been a part of. It has been a wild, fun ride so far!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have gotten incredibly lucky so far. We have had obstacles for sure, but that is what I personally was looking forward to in starting a business. The ability to create, grow, and iterate on a vision is what drives me to keep moving forward. None of that is to say that it hasn’t been hard work…it has. A lot of long days, long nights, and multiple to-do lists to keep our business and personal lives on track! I am incredibly fortunate to have the partner that I do in life!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I have a low-risk approach to everything I do. I like to intentionally lower my ceiling, so that I can ensure my floor is always elevated. Risk-taking is a necessity when trying to create anything, but it is important to be prepared for what the negative outcomes might produce. I find that tempering risks can lead to the same result just delayed. Especially in business, a good product, service, or idea will find success through low risk means. Everything has a snowball effect, whether good or bad, and it is just a matter of building up the snowball. Also, high risk generally means high investment or overreach which can lead to rapid growth and immediate success, but it gives less flexibility to make changes or pivot. A business operating at a lower revenue needs completely different systems, routines, and culture than one operating at a high revenue, It is best to figure these things out without the sky falling all around you.
