Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Cortez.
Hi Alexandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m the owner of A. Cortez Massage. I started my business during the most recent difficult time we faced as a country which is when covid happened. I had lost my job and was on lockdown and did not know exactly what I was going to do or how I would provide for my daughter and me. It just so happened my personal trainer and friend Arthur White, owner of Kingdom Fitness suggested we work together and offered me the opportunity to rent the back room of the gym. With a lot of faith and taking a chance on myself, I decided to give it a shot. I honestly do not think I would be in the position I am in today if it was not for everything that happened during 2020 or that conversation on the gym floor. I’ve been a single mom for most of my adult life and have learned to rely on myself, my faith, and a lot of hard work. I’ve never been scared to work multiple jobs at a time to provide or to help other people with their businesses so when the time came for me to do the same for myself and my daughter, I jumped at it. I love what I do and thoroughly enjoy helping people whether it be with chronic pain or stress relief. I’ve learned a lot along the way and have loved this journey, I had no idea what owning a business would consist of or how much time and effort it takes to make it work but here I am at 32 living what I like to say is my dream.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been all rainbows and butterflies, to say the least. When I first started, I had one client for a few weeks and then nothing or it would be very slow. I honestly doubted if this was even the right decision for me because the bills do not stop no matter how much you try to peruse your dream. Eventually, my name started to get out there more and word of mouth got around and my business grew. The first time I had a week full of back-to-back appointments, I cried in the car on the way home because I was overwhelmed with joy at the thought that I had accomplished one of my goals. It has been the most joyous time in my life to watch my business succeed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business is called A. Cortez Massage, I am a licensed massage therapist. I am known for my deep tissue massages and cupping skills. I have a vast set of knowledge of the muscles and the human body itself. My deep tissue massages almost always include cupping therapy and light stretching as long as there are no contraindications. My clients generally say the massages are detailed and that’s because I have learned that there is no basic routine that will meet everyone’s needs so as a licensed massage therapist, I know that one has to make sure you treat the individual needs. I am most proud of my work, I know that when I meet someone, I’m going to help them and I think that’s a great accomplishment in itself. No one wants to wake up in pain and then go about their day-to-day life without any relief from it. So I strive to just help and hope that I can make a difference.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I feel as though the characteristics that are most important for my success are hard work, dedication, faith, and determination. I think life is hard in general but I learned I have to stay optimistic. Also, I’m a dreamer, I believe everything starts with a big dream and a whole lot of prayer. I know what I want my goals to be and I do not stop until I accomplish them, I also surround myself with family and friends who do not let me slack off. To me, that’s been a big help, if you do not have people in your circle who want you to succeed, you are in the wrong circle.
