Hidden Gems: Meet Alexandrea Dendy of EmpowerHER Spirit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandrea Dendy.

Alexandrea Dendy

Hi, Alexandrea; having you on the platform is an honor. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I am originally from Lithonia, GA, where I was born and raised until high school, when my mom and I moved to North Charleston, SC. After graduation, I completed college in Boiling Springs, NC, and then moved to Orlando, FL. So, if someone asks where I’m from, I typically say the Southeast Coast. I studied psychology as an undergrad but quickly realized I wanted to transition into the accounting industry after deciding to minor in business. Through these studies and my early work experiences, I saw small business owners’ significant need to understand their finances. This realization led me to start my bookkeeping practice to provide relief and financial clarity to entrepreneurs and small business owners. In addition to running my bookkeeping business, I am studying to obtain my CPA license to offer full-service accounting to my clients. While I love my bookkeeping work, I have also started a women’s empowerment nonprofit organization to foster a sisterhood for young women growing their faith in Christ. The foundation of Christ instilled in me at a young age has helped me navigate many challenges. I aim to help many women fulfill their God-given potential through my organization while deepening their faith and intimacy with God.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Growing up, my parents instilled in me and my sister the importance of keeping God at the center of our lives. As a child, you naturally follow your parents’ example, and eventually, it becomes a habit that you either embrace or drift away from. In 2009, I faced the devastating loss of my sister to a rare type of brain cancer, and three years later, my father committed suicide. During these challenging times, I witnessed my mom lean on her faith for strength, and I made a conscious decision not to let these losses diminish my drive for life. Everything I do now is to honor my father and sister, making them proud of who I have become. Another significant struggle was being my obstacle, believing I knew what was best for my life. We often create specific plans for ourselves and try to manipulate circumstances to fit those plans. Alongside this, I experienced a lot of self-doubt, struggling to determine the right career path and questioning whether I would find fulfillment. It wasn’t until I truly surrendered my plans to God that I felt things falling into place, allowing me to understand the purpose I was meant to fulfill.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about EmpowerHER Spirit?
EmpowerHER Spirit’s journey began with a resounding ‘Yes’ to God’s call. In the autumn of 2023, I felt compelled to initiate a Bible study group to nurture women’s spiritual growth. What began as simple gatherings evolved into a profound revelation from God himself. It became evident that this endeavor was destined to transcend the bounds of a typical study group; it was to become a sanctuary—a haven where women could find solace, support, and sisterhood. As EmpowerHER Spirit continues to blossom, our mission remains steadfast: cultivating a nurturing environment where women can delve deep into their faith journey. Our vision is clear—to empower women to embrace what truly matters in life and to embrace their unique roles as leaders wherever they may find themselves. We aspire to be a beacon of light, guiding women toward spiritual enlightenment and enabling them to experience the transformative power of God’s presence in their lives. Through our endeavors, we strive to equip women with the resources they need to embark on a journey of spiritual revelation, empowering them to walk confidently in alignment with God’s divine purposes. EmpowerHER Spirit offers a community of like-minded women through WhatsApp and hosts quarterly Bible studies. As the community continues to grow, we would like to begin impacting it in a major way by diving into serving opportunities around each member’s city.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people who know me or my work with EmpowerHER Spirit might not know that I initially felt unprepared and hesitant to lead a Bible study group. I dealt with imposter syndrome very heavily because I wondered what made me qualified to create a community, let alone lead a Bible study group when I was still newly growing in my faith. Still, through obedience and the understanding that God found me qualified, he would give me everything I needed to empower and support other women in their spiritual journeys.
