Hidden Gems: Meet Amy Smalley of Taylor Smalley, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Smalley.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Back in 2010, I was just finishing up college and I was researching careers so I could figure out where I wanted to be after college. After some research, I decided to be a real estate agent. I called a close friend of mine and asked about the real estate business. I signed up for the class and in less than 20 days I became a licensed real estate agent! My initial goal was to have my own brokerage. While, I don’t have that dream yet, my father-in-law does have his own brokerage. My husband and I also have a Uhaul rental business, where we rent Uhaul Trucks and Trailers as an authorized dealer in Mount Dora. We started small two years ago before the pandemic and our business has exploded. We went from having just a truck and a trailer to multiple trucks, trailers, and now we sell moving supplies!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with all businesses, it has not been a smooth road. I wish I could say everything was lollipops and rainbows but unfortunately, it just doesn’t happen like that in the real life. Our initial struggles were getting the word out about the real estate brokerage and Uhaul pre-pandemic. The pandemic put a halt to how real estate agents operated during the times. Uhaul on the other hand, went from 0 to 60 in a matter of days. We were having to retrieve trucks from Ocala to send out from our new little business. It began to steamroll from that moment on and we have been going strong and steady ever since.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Taylor Smalley, Inc. is a family-owned and operated brokerage. We are not a franchise and we are proud of our roots in Central Florida. We specialize in all types of property solutions and are a “one-stop shop” for real estate needs. We handle residential/commercial sales, rentals, property management, and estate sales. How do you think about luck?
I don’t really think of it as being luck just more blessed to be able to help others through our businesses. It’s great being able to give back to the community and also be a blessing to others. It hasn’t been the easiest road but it’s always worth it in the end.
