Hidden Gems: Meet Burgers and Booch of Joe’s Oat Patties Mobile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Burgers and Booch.

Burgers and Booch, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We started our family-owned business back in 2007. We started the company in efforts to bring easy more health-conscious, as well as flavorful vegan food to the market. During this time, we learned new ingredients healthier ways to put vegan food together and that begin our journey to veganism. We developed a product called Joe’s Oat Patties a vegan burger mix which is made from organic oats, quinoa, veggie, herbs, spices, and seeds… Easy to prepare by just adding 1 cup of hot water. In order for us to get the product in the customer’s hands, we started setting up at the farmers market. Back then, we were some of the pioneers of the farmer’s markets. We were a part of a group of vendors that were some of the first vendors to participate in the new markets around town and in the Tampa area. The farmer’s markets allowed us to sample our burger mixes to the market goers, then we started getting requests for to sell burgers instead of sampling burgers. and this was the start of us branding our product and name. After traveling the farmer’s markets for a year, our first day at the Lake Eola market we met Wholefoods new manager and she loved the product and wanted to see it on the shelves in Wholefoods Market. We began selling our product to health food stores and restaurants throughout the state. Selling Joe’s Oat Patties wholesale took us away from the markets and interacting with our customers, the only interaction we came in contact with customers was during our demos in the stores.

People who love the product and remember us from the farmers market were longing for our prepare burgers and sandwiches the way we used to make them at the markets. So we decided to start our pre-made food line, not just burgers but several other items, we learned different techniques to prepare the mix such as links, meatless balls, crumbles for pizzas, pasta, wraps, etc. the possibilities with Joe’s Oat Patties can go on and on. Popup shops became a new trend during 2016 so we began popping up serving vegan prepared food featuring Joe’s Oat Patties with an elevated twist. During our time of doing popups, we developed a desire to go mobile and that’s when Burgers and Booch was born. At the present time, we setup every Saturday from 12-4pm in Mount Dora at The Health Basket health food store unless we are participating in a festival. Our hopes are to get people in the area to visit the trailer frequently. So far every week, we see return customers as well as new faces.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely been a struggle along the way! When we first started this journey, we were literally the only vendor in the farmers market selling vegan products. So we basically had to educate our customers and potential customers on the benefits of eating vegan as well as all the unfamiliar ingredients that were being introduced to the world at the time. People thought we were out of our minds when we decided to sell burgers made from oatmeal.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
