Hidden Gems: Meet Cassie Ferrer of Numbers Nerd Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Ferrer.

Hi Cassie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Hong Kong. I was raised by my mom while my father lived in the U.S. I moved here to the States when I was a teenager to live with my dad. My first stop was a small town called Pocatello, Idaho. It was truly difficult for me to adjust due to cultural differences and language barrier. During college, I would work multiple part-time jobs to support my tuition and living expenses. My mother was always very tough on me and wanted me to excel at school. This helped me develop my strong work ethic and the drive to succeed. I ended up graduated college with high honors and accepted a position at a financial institution. I went on and obtained my MBA. Ultimately, I was promoted to a First Vice President position at a major bank in Orlando. While working for the financial industry, I developed deep passion in helping others improve their finances. I found it very meaningful as I witnessed financial hardship from my parents. My step-father used to have gambling issues and my family would have to move from apartment to apartment in Hong Kong. During my early 20s, I made some major financial mistakes and lived beyond my means and made unnecessary purchases to boost my ego. I learned from my mistakes and develop strategies to satisfy my needs in other ways.

Last year, I stepped down from my VP position and started a consulting firm helping individuals and businesses to improve their finances by applying various financial strategies, including budgeting, debt repayment planning, business planning, and cash flow projection. I’m also a big supporter of woman empowerment and I believe that I can inspire others by sharing my story. I encouraged others to share their stories to help others as well. I started an organization called Behind those Heels sharing stories from women who have overcome major challenges. Last year, Behind those Heels published its first book Behind those Heels, which is composed of stories from 11 incredible women. It achieved Amazon Best-Selling status and helped eight authors became a first-time published authors. Behind those Heels also has a podcast sharing stories from women all over the world. The podcast currently has with over 3,000 downloads. I now work remotely as a commercial underwriter and I continue to help educating others to improve their finances.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were many challenges and obstacles but these challenges also provided opportunities and lessons. When I moved here from Hong Kong as a teenager, it was difficult to adjust due to cultural differences and language barriers. My father left me and my mother and moved back to the U.S. when I was two. Growing up in Hong Kong, I was bullied a lot due to my insecurity from childhood abandonment. However, these experiences help preparing me to be a better parent and understand the importance of communicating with my children.
