Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Campbell.
Hi Charlie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started with Hounds Town Orlando-Universal right before the store opened. I use to work in the service industry and wanted a change from serving alcohol to people, and my mother found Hounds Town, and asked me to work for her. This was my first job working with dogs, or any animals for that matter, but I quickly fell in love with it. now over 3 1/2 years later, I can confidently say I am great at what I do. I have always loved dogs, had them growing up my entire life, so coming in here and then connecting with people and the pets just fits so well. I do everything I can to make sure our environment is as clean and safe as possible, we group based on size, play style, and personality, so being able to read dogs body language and understand their temperaments and know what they need becomes extremely important and I have fully bought in and learned how to do that and how to create well balanced play groups for dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say smooth, this is obviously a new small business, starting one will always have its bumps. In the beginning we had laid out procedures, and then as soon as you open and start using those, you figure out what one’s work, and what ones really don’t. Trying to find the right people can be a tall task as well, going through interviews trying to find the kind of people that want to help us grow and grow with us.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Hounds Town is a fully interactive daycare and boarding facility, so unlike some daycares, our dogs stay out in curated play groups all day long. We group our dogs by size, play style, and personality. Dogs are natural pack animals, so being in a pack of likeminded dogs is extremely beneficial for their physical, mental and psychological health. Everything we do here is for the dogs, we truly treat each dog that comes in like our own. We don’t discriminate against breed or disability, as long as the dog passes our free temperament evaluation, they are welcome to join the pack!
How do you think about luck?
We have had a small amount of bad luck, since we got our loan to open Hounds Town around Covid times, the interest rate we were expecting jumped significantly, which made our payments each month much higher and then made our breakeven point jump up.
