Hidden Gems: Meet Cindy Gray of ComForCare Home Care – Greater Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cindy Gray.

Hi Cindy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Caring for others has always been part of who I am. After graduating from Apopka high school I attended the University of South Florida where I received my bachelor of science in nursing degree. From the very beginning of my nursing career, I was drawn to people at their most vulnerable. I worked in pediatrics, brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke rehabilitation—roles that shaped not only my clinical foundation, but also my heart for compassionate, person-centered care.

Following my hospital nursing years, I built a successful career in the medical device industry, working primarily with individuals living in chronic pain. While after 25 years in that field, I realized I was grateful for that experience, but I felt a clear and undeniable pull to change paths. I began asking myself how I truly wanted to spend the rest of my life—and the answer always came back to caring for people in a more personal, meaningful way. My aspirations were always to retire and become a Hospice volunteer nurse… One of my passions is helping people at the end of life, especially when it comes to making decisions on how that time will be managed.

That clarity arrived unexpectedly while exploring new opportunities on LinkedIn, where I discovered the chance to purchase a senior care franchise. It felt like everything in my life had led me to that moment. I saw an opportunity not just to own a business, but to serve my community in a way that aligned with my values and my heart.

Today, I am proud to be the owner of ComForCare Home Care – Greater Orlando, with our business office located in Longwood, FL. For the past 10 years, we have had the privilege of serving seniors and their families throughout Orange and Seminole Counties, helping them remain safe, comfortable, and independent in their own homes.

What truly makes this journey special is the incredible team I get to work alongside. Each caregiver brings not only skill, but heart, and a genuine commitment to the people we serve. Together, we show up every day for our clients and their families—often during life’s most tender and challenging moments. Although I originally got into the business to care for our clients, I have since learned that having the ability to employ people, develop people watch people grow in their career and have power over the culture of a business is so amazing to me.

Family is the foundation of everything I do. I am married to my incredibly supportive husband, Clem, and together we share a beautifully blended family. From him, I gained two bonus sons, CJ and Lane, and now the joy of our newest grandbaby, C4. Clem and I also have 24-year-old twins, Rex and Tori, who continue to be a source of pride and joy. Tori has followed in my footsteps and has become a nurse working in Neuro ICU in Saint Pete. Rex has become an instrumental part of the admin team at ComForCare. I couldn’t be more proud and happy to see the success of my children.

My happiest moments are almost always spent gathered around the table with family—good food, good wine, and meaningful conversation.

I am also fortunate to have my mother living with me at this time. Having this experience definitely has enhanced my empathy and understanding of what our families go through. I love every minute I get to spend with my mother. She has been a steady and loving force in my life, especially after the loss of my biological father in Vietnam when I was only nine months old. Later, a man named Pete chose to step into my life as my dad, teaching me that family is not only about biology, but about love, commitment, and showing up for one another.

When I look back, I see that every chapter of my life—professionally and personally—prepared me for the work I do today. Serving seniors feels deeply personal, because caregiving has always been woven into my own story.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I reflect on my journey, I don’t immediately think of hardship in the traditional sense. I’ve always felt deeply grateful, especially when I consider how difficult life has been for so many others. My path has been doable—but it has never been easy. It has required discipline, sacrifice, and an incredible amount of hard work over many years.

For 25 years in the medical device industry, my days were long and demanding. It wasn’t unusual to wake up at four in the morning, drive to another city to be ready for a 7:00 a.m. surgery, spend the entire day in the operating room or making physician calls, host a dinner that evening, and then drive two hours home—only to do it all over again the next day. That pace was relentless, and while it was exciting and fulfilling early on, it required countless hours, missed sleep, and sustained endurance.

I began my career with a small, $8 million company where I had freedom, flexibility, and the ability to be creative. I was able to grow my business in a way that felt authentic and aligned with my values. Over time, that company was acquired and eventually sold for $1.3 billion. While the growth was impressive, the culture shifted dramatically. What had once been entrepreneurial became bureaucratic, layered with red tape, and increasingly restrictive. The ability to create, innovate, and move quickly disappeared—and I found myself burned out and yearning for meaningful change.

That desire to build something of my own led me to open **ComForCare Home Care – Greater Orlando**, and with that came one of my greatest challenges: the financial reality of entrepreneurship. After the first year, it became clear that I didn’t yet have the financial stability needed to sustain the business long-term. My husband, Clem, and I had some very honest and thoughtful conversations about what the next chapter would require. It meant choosing between downsizing a lifestyle we were accustomed to—or finding another way to support the dream while keeping it alive.

Ultimately, we decided that I would continue to operate ComForCare while also returning to a full-time role in the neuromodulation industry. That meant traveling all over the state of Florida for work, while still running the company. It was exhausting, but it was also an act of faith. During that time, I was incredibly fortunate to have a trusted colleague and fellow nurse, Cheryl Fox, step in to help run the day-to-day operations. Her support was instrumental in keeping the business moving forward.

After three years, ComForCare reached a place where I could finally step away from the second full-time job. Ironically, that year was 2020—and just as I prepared to focus fully on the business, COVID-19 changed everything. Like so many healthcare providers, we were forced to adapt quickly in an uncertain and frightening time. Fortunately, we leaned into our strengths, supported our caregivers and clients, and found ways to serve our community safely. Against the odds, our business not only survived—it thrived.

Another challenge I faced earlier in my career was navigating a male-dominated industry. When I first entered medical device sales, it was very much a “good old boys” network. I was often the only woman—or one of very few—in sales meetings. I could hear the whispers, the grunts, and the groans when I walked into the room. Not everyone was happy to see a woman at the table. Over time, I learned to let my work speak for itself, to stay confident in my abilities, and to persist even when I felt unwelcome.

Looking back, the struggles weren’t single moments—they were seasons of perseverance. Each one taught me resilience, humility, and the value of having people beside you who believe in your vision. Those lessons continue to shape how I lead, how I care, and how I serve my community today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
