Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Norton.
Hi Courtney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
5 years ago when I purchased my own home, I knew that I wanted a better life for myself and my kids and that was going to start by being more hands on with animals (mainly poultry), food, and self sufficiency. We started with 4 chickens which quickly turned into 15. When I met my husband a few years ago is when we really hunkered down and expanded our homestead into what it is now which consists of 7 designated chicken coops for eating eggs, hatching chicks and purebred eggs. We have a section of our yard specifically for fruit trees, gardening and compost and We also have turkeys, pigs, quail & soon to be rabbit. We also can our own food and process a lot of our own meat and have taught our children about the importance of our animals and their benefit to a healthier way of living. One of our main goals and hopes is to provide the community with the ability to learn from us and purchase from us at a low cost because we believe everyone should be able to be self sufficient and not heavily rely on over processed food.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think farming or hobby farming for that matter ever is easy. It always comes with loss, hardships, and especially learning. Some of the biggest struggles for us was realizing that not everyone is going to appreciate that you in fact due process your own animals. Sometimes your kids don’t understand it either and there’s a lot of conversations about it. Overall though it’s been far more rewarding than it has been challenging.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Norton’s Legacy Farm is a local hobby farm in Mims, FL specializing in poultry, specifically purebred chicks and hatching eggs. We specialize in education about helping them grow, brooder safety and what to expect as they reach maturity. We are known for selling a lot of eating eggs to local farms, as well as hatching eggs to local schools with 4H kids as local projects. What sets us apart is that we want to be affordable. Yes, we have specialty, sought after breeds, but we believe everyone should be able to raise their own livestock and enjoy farming.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
