Hidden Gems: Meet Debi Rumph of The Law Offices of Debi Rumph

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debi Rumph.

Debi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started out working for a large law firm. I represented big clients who had lots of money and power. However, I became a lawyer because I wanted to represent everyday people who needed help fighting the big money and big power. The playing field was uneven. I found this especially unnerving in landlord and tenant law. Many landlords had lawyers, but the tenants did not. I saw many inequities occur to tenants because they simply did not understand the law. Therefore, I made a commitment to stay the course with tenants: I decided to represent a segment of the population that tended to be underrepresented. Instead of gravitating to those practice areas that apparently more lucrative, I decided to make this practice area profitable and lucrative by becoming more effective, efficient, and creative.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been bumpy. I was surprised by the demand–and honestly, the impatience of many non-paying tenants. Many tenants still expect emergency service, but without having to pay for such services. Thus, we had to roll up our sleeves and work on managing expectations from the onset. Since so few lawyers focus on just tenants, we have also had to work on managing the demand. We were tested in the recent COVID19 temporary eviction bans. We were able to rise to the occasion and provide many tenants with the necessary information to best position themselves. However, we continue to make adjustments along the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Law Offices of Debi Rumph?
My law office has a Tenant Clinic. I am known for my passionate representation of my clients. I believe that all clients deserve A+ representation and zealous advocacy. Tenants tend to be underrepresented. Nor do tenants have meaningful opportunity for conflict resolution before the filing of a lawsuit. Thus, I pride myself on developing customized strategies for my clients. These customized strategies tend to divert them from the court system–saving them time, money, stress, and other resources. Now, I mostly focus on tenants with disputes with their landlords and I assist tenants in the homebuying process.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
My favorite apps are Streaks. It helps me to encourage and motivate myself to become the person that I would like to be. I also love my Sadhguru apps. It helps me with yoga and meditation practices. My favorite books are “How Yoga Works,” “The Tao of Pooh,” “Inner Engineering,” and “You Are a Badass.” These books have catapulted my spiritual life, and thus, my life, my career, and my practice.
