Hidden Gems: Meet Demetric Curry of Lighthouse For Health And Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Demetric Curry.

Hi Demetric, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got my first taste of training after football season in college. I was playing football at Florida State University and in the off-season, I would go and do work study with the Strength and Conditioning Staff and train the women’s track and softball teams. I then moved to New Jersey after college started personal training in a place I had never been before. I lived in New Jersey for 4 years working at a couple different locations and moving up to different roles such as PT, PT, and Sales Manager, and also General Manager. I had fun and learned a lot while there and helped to set the groundwork for what I would be doing now. After moving back home to Florida, I ended up taking my foot off the pedal on my fitness career. Living in my hometown and trying to do fitness wasn’t the same as it was in New Jersey and I wasn’t able to make the kind of money I was able to make there which was discouraging for me. Still being young at that time I didn’t understand the gold mine that I was sitting on if I would have stood strong on what I believed in and didn’t let other people discourage me from my true calling. I spent time working in Corrections which was fine for the time but not what I saw myself doing in the long run. I eventually moved to Orlando in 2015 with my soon-to-be wife and found a job working for Enterprise Holdings. During this time my wife and I would work out often together with me coming up with the routines and such and started talking about starting a fitness company together. We kicked around the idea for some time, but finally, in 2018, we came up with Lighthouse for Health and Wellness LLC. Even though we had a company name and ideas, we didn’t know what we were really doing, but we did want to start. In the beginning, it was just us doing some free fitness challenges online and local events, but nothing full-time yet. That didn’t full take shape until 2021…

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
NO, IT HAS NOT LOL! There are always peaks and valleys and I had my more than fair share of valleys. One thing about me is that I knew I had a lot of potential and ability to do a lot of different things. Fitness and training are two things that I am really good at and doesn’t take a lot for me to come up with programs and such for myself and others. That being the case there was still a part of me that was afraid I was going to fall flat on my face or fear that someone was going to say what I was doing was wrong or not good. I put myself down a lot and have full confidence in my abilities and what God had put into me. I tended to work in different positions that I could thrive in but not be happy in at the same time. In 2020 I had partnered with a local gym to do some fitness classes and training which was looking good and really about to take off and then Covid hit and stopped all momentum. I was laid off from one job at that time as well and really wanted to take the chance at running my our company full time, but I let my fear of failure take a hold of me again and took a position as a Financial Rep. I ended up leaving that position in April 2021 and decided that it was now or never to really put my faith in what I know God had for me and took the leap with the support of my wife to finally do this full time and now I couldn’t be happier.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a company, we want to guide people to a healthier way of living. The company was formed by combining the expertise of my wife Dr. Shacara Curry and myself. She is a pharmacist and specializes in Hypertension and Diabetes. With my expertise in fitness and sports training, we found it a perfect pairing for our company. We believe that with a healthy diet and a consistent exercise regimen you can beat many of the health issues that we fight daily and can live a life without many of the medications that we are prescribed to take.

The moto for our company is P.U.S.H which stands for Persevere and Understand the Sacrifice is for your Health. We believe in PUSH and that if anyone embraces that they can overcome the bad habits they currently have and can move forward with a more fulfilling life for themselves.

What I do within our company is provide fitness and nutrition coaching both online and in-person, sports training for youth ages 7-18, along with mental fitness training.

What I’m known for is putting the “personal” in personal training. What that means not only do I provide programs and training specific to the person I’m working with, I also consider the different aspects of person’s life into who I train them. Case in point, if my client is working a tough job and has a lot of stresses to deal with and bring that into our session, I will break out the boxing gloves and spend the first 5-10 mins getting some of the stress out so that it doesn’t linger and be something that take home to their families. I prepare to pivot if the session recalls for it. Keeping the end goal in mind while being able to change up to the needs of the clients is what I believe makes me special as a trainer. What I’m also known for is my 3-question standard for daily upkeep. Many days people let a number on a scale dictate how they look and feel. My three questions that I have my clients go by when training with me is 1. How do you feel? 2. How do you look? 3. What do the numbers say? We all should know that numbers don’t always tell the whole story. If I’m working out consistently and eating good and doing all the things I should on a daily basis and I’m feeling good and noticing that my body is changing for the better, but the scale says I only lost 2 pounds in over a month should I feel bad about myself? Of course not, we should never let a machine dictate how we feel and look on a daily basis. Not saying the numbers aren’t important, but they don’t tell the whole story and shouldn’t dictate on feelings on a daily.

What I’m most proud of is that we as a company are leading people and being a true Lighthouse for individuals and families that are trying to find their way. We won’t be the flashiest or fancy or anything like that, but our hearts are big and we look to provide the best service that we can to each and every person. We look to give value to any and every one we meet whether they are clients or not we truly want everyone to have a healthy and happy life.

What we offer is One on One online fitness coaching, In-person fitness training, physical transformation, youth speed, and agility training, along with mindset and mental coaching.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that we are diverse. I come from an area that is not very diverse and everyone either knows each other or probably related in some way. I like that as a fitness professional there are so many of us around town that we can support each other, because it’s rare that we will run across the same individuals when trying to bring on clients. I’m not worried about my clients, be taken by another trainer that I know, or feel like I have to compete with.
