Hidden Gems: Meet Donna Wrobel of 3 Pillars Psychiatry & Mental Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Wrobel.

Hi Donna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was married for close to 20 years and was suddenly faced with an unexpected divorce. I had been a stay-at-home mother of four for ten years but I relocated to Florida in 2008 to live near my sister and to start over. I felt so lucky to be working, but to provide better financially for my family, I applied to nursing school, something I had wanted to do for many years. For several years I worked full time, attended school full time and juggled all of my kids’ activities. I finally graduated in 2013 with my family present and my youngest son, Anthony, presenting me with my nursing pin. I began my career in critical care, working with patients with advanced liver disease. After one of my children was diagnosed with cancer at 15, I transitioned into oncology, joining an incredible team of nurses caring for patients with cancer at Advent Health Winter Park. I eventually transitioned to a leadership role as a Nursing Supervisor, a role I loved because I worked with so many awesome people all around the hospital, but I missed working closely with my patients. I went back to school to earn my MSN degree to become an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner specializing in psychiatric mental health.

Working in mental health is my true passion. I originally worked in a large clinic where I received excellent experience, but I wanted to do more than just dispense medications. I want to take the time to listen and build meaningful relationships with my patients. I eventually opened my own private practice, 3 Pillars Psychiatry & Mental Health, to create a space where I could devote the time and attention that everyone deserves. My mission is to provide an environment of safety, respect and trust, and I work hard to care for each patient’s unique needs. There can be such a stigma associated with psychiatry but there is absolutely no shame in caring for one’s mental health. I work with each patient to assess and evaluate their needs, and we work together to develop their treatment plan.

Many patients may benefit from medication management but not every patient requires a prescription. Sometimes a person’s anxiety or depression symptoms may be the result of attachment wounds. Most people are aware of trauma wounds – things that happen to us that should not have i.e. a motor vehicle accident, medical crisis or random violence. But many people suffer from attachment wounds which are the things that should have happened but did not, i.e. unmet emotional needs. These most often occur in childhood when their caregiver did not, or was not able to, provide the sense of safety and unconditional love every child deserves. As adults, these subconscious wounds can trigger a person’s feelings of anger, shame, rejection or abandonment. I decided to pursue advanced credentials in a specialized therapy to help people suffering from these wounds. Some benefit from intensive individual sessions designed to process their attachment wounds and experience lasting healing. For those patients with a history of domestic violence, which sometimes stems from unresolved attachment wounds, I also facilitate a weekly support group. My goal is to bring awareness of the different types of relational trauma including physical, emotional, financial, sexual etc. and to help participants recognize their own strength and purpose and to develop their sense of safety.

As someone who had to overcome many challenges along the way to my current career, I work hard to provide empathy and to meet each person where they are at. We all have struggles, as an adolescent in school or an adult dealing with situational stressors or long-standing mental health needs. Everyone should be respected and understood and I look forward to providing all of my patients with the exceptional care they deserve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was not easy to work full time, go to school full time and be a full time parent but I had a lot of help from my family and the support of my own therapist who helped me navigate my own trauma. He taught me to recognize and process the trauma my children and I had endured and he helped me navigate a new future that I had not previously thought was possible.

As you know, we’re big fans of 3 Pillars Psychiatry & Mental Health. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

My Commitment

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Mental health services are not just helpful, they can be a lifeline for some. There are so many stressors affecting people every day and mental health providers can specialize in any number of different types of diagnoses or therapies. Personally, would like to grow my practice to perhaps include a second provider who shares my desire to provide full-person, holistic care, including both medication management and coaching/therapy services. I currently practice virtually but would love to return to providing in person care and to expand the number of weekly groups to support the women of the Orlando area who are survivors of relational trauma.
