Today we’d like to introduce you to Flaurence Dorce.
Hi Flaurence, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Ever since I was 17, I knew I wanted to own a business. My first job was hair braiding at a booth near Universal’s Islands of Adventure, and one day, the owner shared how she started her business. Hearing her story and seeing a woman create something of her own really inspired me. I didn’t know what my business would be yet, but I knew I wanted that same independence.
After high school, I planned to study fashion merchandising, but life took me in another direction. I’d always loved beauty, especially makeup, but didn’t necessarily want to be a makeup artist. One day, a friend mentioned how great my brows always looked and suggested I do them professionally. That simple comment planted the seed in my mind.
I started learning everything I could about brows, skincare, and aesthetics. I got certified in brow tattooing, went to esthetician school, and began taking clients wherever I could, starting with friends and family and slowly growing from there.
When I began, there weren’t many women of color offering brow and skincare services in my area, and I wanted to change that. My goal has always been to create a space where everyone feels seen, confident, and cared for. That purpose continues to drive everything I do today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable.
When I first started, I had almost no clients. I relied on friends, family, and Groupon to get people through the door. Groupon wasn’t perfect, but it gave me exposure, helped me build reviews, and boosted my visibility on Google. That’s how word of mouth started spreading.
Finding the right workspace was another challenge. Early on, I went through a few unexpected moves before finally finding the space that I’m in now.
I also dealt with moments of self-doubt, wondering if I was good enough or if my business would survive. But instead of giving up, I kept learning, improving, and believing in my craft.
Those experiences taught me that you have to be adaptable. Things rarely go exactly as planned, but if you stay committed and keep your faith, you’ll always find your way forward.
As you know, we’re big fans of Brown Sugar Brows and Beauty . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Brown Sugar Brows and Beauty is a woman-owned, black-owned beauty studio dedicated to brow and lash services, including ombre brows, brow tinting, brow lamination, brow waxing, and lash extensions.
I think what sets my business apart is the personalized care behind everything I do. I don’t approach any service with a “one-size-fits-all” mentality. I take the time to ask my clients what they want, what their goals are, and what their past experiences have been like. Then I combine that with my professional judgment to make sure what we’re doing is both realistic and flattering for their natural features.
Attention to detail and customization are everything when it comes to brows. A lot of people rush or apply the same method to everyone. I focus on brow mapping and symmetry, so each client leaves with a shape that is tailored to them.
I also think my clients can feel that I genuinely care. I’m not just providing a service; I’m building trust. Many of my clients tell me that coming in for their appointments feels like therapy, and I take pride in that.
My business isn’t just about beauty; it’s about serving the community and helping people feel the most confident version of themselves.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality that has helped me succeed most is my people-first mindset. I’ve worked in restaurants, retail, and other people-facing jobs for years, and I’ve learned how to read the room, communicate well, and make every client feel heard. Whether it’s listening to their goals or explaining what’s realistic, I approach every service like a collaboration. No two clients are the same, and no two brow or lash sets should be either.
