Hidden Gems: Meet James Rogers of Be Better At Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Rogers.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I didn’t just build a body. I built a self.

There was a time in my life when I didn’t know who I was. I floated through the days with no purpose, no confidence, and no sense of direction. I didn’t believe I was capable of more because I had never given myself a reason to believe otherwise.

I was working night shifts at CVS, coming home and playing video games until 3 a.m. I had no structure, no drive, and no real identity. I felt invisible—to others, and honestly, to myself. I didn’t think much would ever change.

But then something small happened. I stopped buying snacks after my shift. That one decision led to a significant drop in weight within weeks. And with that shift, something clicked: Maybe I can do this. That spark of hope was the beginning of everything.

Unfortunately, like many others, I followed bad advice early on. I chased quick results through restrictive eating and fad diets. I lost weight—but not in a healthy way. And while I looked different on the outside, I still felt lost inside.

That was my first real lesson: fitness isn’t a trick or a phase. It’s a lifestyle—one that grows with you and into you. Over time, I stopped chasing fast fixes and started building real habits. I introduced structure, learned about nutrition, and got consistent with my workouts. The more I showed up for myself, the more I began to uncover who I was underneath it all.

It wasn’t just about muscle or fat. It was about self-worth. Identity. Confidence.

Everything changed when I joined the Fire Academy. The demands were high, and I knew I needed help, so I hired a personal trainer. That experience transformed me. He didn’t just guide my workouts—he helped me rebuild my foundation. He taught me how to move well, eat well, and believe in myself again. That mentorship is what sparked my desire to one day help others do the same.

Eventually, I became a firefighter, and I carried everything I had learned with me. But something deeper had shifted. Fitness wasn’t just something I did anymore—it was something I was. It had woven itself into every part of my life: how I think, how I act, how I show up for myself and for others.

Through that long, messy, and powerful journey, I became someone I never thought I could be: confident, driven, self-aware. I discovered that while opportunities matter, what matters more is believing you’re worthy of them—and preparing yourself to pursue them when they appear.

And that’s why I do what I do today.

My mission is simple: to help people who feel lost—like I once did—step into the version of themselves they’ve always wanted to become. Through fitness, wellness, and mindset coaching, I help people build more than just their bodies. I help them build their belief in themselves.

The human experience is about growth. It’s about rising, little by little, into a better version of yourself. That’s the journey I took—and it’s the one I now have the honor of leading others through.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path wasn’t straight—and it definitely wasn’t smooth. It was full of curves, detours, and dead ends. I learned through trial and error, discovering what worked and what didn’t, failing more times than I can count. But with every misstep, I gained a lesson. And that’s the beauty of transformation: the process is the point.

One of my biggest struggles was building a relationship with myself through fitness—figuring out how the two were connected. For a while, I believed my entire identity was my body. If I wasn’t lean, strong, or performing at a certain level, I didn’t feel like I had value. But over time, I’ve come to understand something deeper: your body isn’t your identity. It’s a reflection of your mindset—of what you’re willing to work for, grow through, and show up for consistently.

There was a phase where I became too rigid. I pushed people, events, and even joy out of my life if it didn’t align with my exact fitness or nutrition goals. And in doing so, I lost something important—connection. Community. A sense of self beyond macros and gym sessions.

Learning to balance structure with flexibility, discipline with presence—that’s a hard lesson. And I had to figure it out the long way.

Now, it’s part of my mission to help others avoid that trap. You don’t have to lose yourself to get in shape. In fact, when done right, fitness is the very thing that helps you find yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My business, Be Better at Fitness, is more than just a personal training service—it’s a movement built on the belief that fitness is the foundation for becoming the best version of yourself.

I specialize in creating custom fitness and wellness programs that go beyond the workout. I don’t just help people build muscle or lose weight—I help them build confidence, reclaim their identity, and rediscover their power. Whether you’re training in a gym or just getting started at home, I meet people where they are and teach them how to create lasting change from the inside out.

What sets my business apart is our focus on the entire person. I don’t believe in quick fixes, toxic diet culture, or surface-level results. I’ve been down that road myself—and it nearly made me lose my sense of self. Everything I teach is grounded in sustainability, mindset, and real-life application. I work with my clients to integrate fitness into their lives in a way that supports—not sacrifices—their relationships, careers, and passions.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the message: Be Better. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about committing to growth. It’s a reminder that you’re always one choice away from a better outcome, a better day, a better you.

For anyone who’s ever felt lost, stuck, or unsure of where they belong, I want you to know this: your transformation is possible. I’ve lived it. And now I help others do the same.

What makes you happy?
My family. My friends. My purpose. Helping people. I enjoy life in general. I think we get caught up so often in materialistic things, status, what people think of us. While I think those can supplement some aspects of life, my happiness comes from the relationships I have, and the value I can provide to other people.

Star Wars would be my short answer though. 😀
