Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Gutierrez.
Hi Jorge, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started working in construction when I was 17. I took a summer job as a laborer because I wanted to make money so I can purchase a car. Once I completed High school, I took on a full-time construction job and attend college. I once on and off with school because I just hated school. I never was able to see what college could offer me for the money and time I was investing. I had no clue what I wanted to do for my career, but I knew college was not offering me the challenge I needed to use my creativity. I stopped attending college and started exploring different roles I could try in the construction industry. I was fascinated with how I had to plan my tasks, take action with my hands and then stand back and instantly see what I built. I fought with the fact that I wanted to progress in the construction industry because it wasn’t a pristine career. Eventually, my personal life was growing, and I had a surprise blessing. I was told that I was going to be a father. This really set a fire under me, and I had to really stop caring about what people might think about my career. I fully invested in construction. I set a goal to be a project manager, and within 6 months, I achieved my goal. I worked extremely hard during and off work hours to learn as much as possible. I was in control of my education!! Fast forward to 2008, and we had a really bad recession. Florida was hit extremely hard, and I was left with no work. I took advantage of the recession and joined the Air Force National Guard. I enlisted and took a job in their construction field. I wanted to learn how other organizations performed construction tasks. I proudly served 6 years and learned a lot! I am so thankful for all the people I met and the experience of protecting our country. Now I run a general contractor company that is unique from other companies. We specialize in new construction and renovations on Commerical or residential properties. We also work for other general contractors that need help with managing siding labor and managing material.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been extremely tough. For every task that involves running a business, I have to learn and achieve it on my own. Once my company grew to a point where I could afford employees, I had to learn how to train. Training employees is a little more difficult because it involves personality and emotion.
We’ve been impressed with Insight Construction and Management, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We specialize in new construction of Commerical and residential properties. We also perform renovations and additions to Commerical and luxury residential properties. What makes us unique is that other general contractors can hire us to manage siding installation as long as providing and manage the material. We understand that it takes a team to build an excellent product, and we are not afraid to work with others.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe modular construction will make everyone start thinking differently about being efficient. Our industry seems to be accepting the fact that technology is here to help, so we are starting to see some really awesome products that will make things a little easier
