Hidden Gems: Meet Joshua Walker of MoJo Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Walker.

Hi Joshua, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually got my start pretty young. My parents ran a church and I started helping out by filming and editing services. Around that time, my brother and I would make little skateboarding and basketball videos just for fun using basic tools like Movie Maker. Those early projects kind of planted the seed but it wasn’t until my sister gifted me a DSLR around college graduation that I really started focusing on photography. During COVID in 2020, I finally had the time to dive deep and learn what it takes to create that polished, professional feel. I started offering free shoots to build experience, connect with models and just experiment. Those collaborations and the creative meetups I attended, really helped me grow. Over time, what started as an interest turned into MoJo Photography. Today, we do studio and outdoor portrait, studio and outdoor portrait work, events, fashion, branding, and we specialize in video portraits too. It’s been a steady journey of learning, practice, community and growth, but at the core, it’s still about what hooked me early on—telling a story through visuals.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest early challenges was communication. I’m naturally introverted, and at first directing models or, explaining poses felt pretty intimidating. But, through consistent collaboration sessions and meetups, I gradually learned how to guide people, draw out their vision, and build trust. Another challenge was definitely budget. At the beginning I was working with very basic gear, but I focused on squeezing as much quality as possible out of what I had, rather than waiting for perfect equipment. Those constraints, actually forced me to be more creative and intentional. Looking back, those growing pains shaped not only my style, but my approach to clients. Listening closely, adapting, and bringing their vision to life.

As you know, we’re big fans of MoJo Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
MoJo Photography is built around portraits and video portraits, studio and on location. My mechanical engineering background makes me systematic and precise, but the heart of it is creative storytelling and helping people feel seen. We care a lot about motivating others, too. We share content that encourages people to express themselves and push past creative blocks. Whether it’s a project plan, a location tip, or a quick video pep talk, the goal is the same, help people show up as their best selves.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
That sums it up! We are part time, but this business give us fullfilment.
