Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules Fleming.
Jules, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for makeup and all things art started when I was in theater school. I was working on our school’s performance of the Opera Mikado. There was something about the colors, patterns, textures, and movements of the kimonos and backdrops that resonated very deeply with me. I fell so far in love that I decided to learn the art of Geisha makeup artistry. This inspired me to continue learning and working in different avenues of the industry, so I moved to Chicago to start cosmetology school. After that, I went on to work for over 3 decades for multiple major makeup brands, runway events, film/tv, special effects, national ad campaigns, and editorial work for international magazines, and then eventually started my own makeup team! Throughout all my different experiences I also gained another passion for teaching.
I have worked for numerous brands and taught as an artistry trainer as well as worked for other teams where I could collaborate and guide newer artists in the field. When I decided to start my own team, I wanted to pull from previous experiences. I had worked for many other teams and had seen many of the ups and downs within the industry. For my own team, I wanted to take the best of all my experiences and create a luxury team of like-minded professionals who worked to build each other up and provide an elevated, unique experience for each client. I want all my team members to be passionate about their work, creative in their mindset and feel an uplifting sense of camaraderie with their fellow artists.
My team in Chicago brought success so I decided to expand back to my roots with my family and start my Florida Teams as well! I am so proud to say we have teams covering all of Central and South Florida down into the keys. While running my teams, I still find joy in the creative outlets I have always loved and continue to work on set, in editorial, boudoir, film, and so much more!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life is anything but a smooth road and business is the same. There is always uncertainty about what each year will look like and what lies ahead. I have faced many major challenges along the way, and I have always managed to switch my gears and pivot to make a tough situation a successful one.
During the pandemic when everything shut down, beauty services were at the top of the list for non-essential. This was a tough hit, and really put me and my team into the unknown of what was to come. I realized that to calm my anxiety and keep my skills sharp, I needed a creative outlet. I turned to the canvas and started my journey in a new medium. I was totally shocked when I started to create and sell large pieces of artwork that clients wanted in their homes, I was thrilled! I used all that time and energy that I would normally put towards makeup artistry and found other success in the meantime. When COVID restrictions started to lighten I was able to get back to what I love and continue to grow in my industry.
Being adaptive is a large part of being an entrepreneur as you must go with the ever-changing economy and trends.
