Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Neidig.
Hi Kendra, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started out with the love of animals at a very young age. From there, I went to school at the University of New England for Marine Biology and Animal Behavior with a focus on training marine mammals.
I received my first internship at Finish Forward working with dogs and positive reinforcement! From there, I went on to intern at Oceans of Fun with seals and seal lions, Dolphins Plus with dolphins, and Theater of the Sea with sea lions, dolphins, turtles, and even sharks!
After a few months, I was hired on at Theater of the Sea as a Parrot Trainer. I grew up having parrots, so this was an exciting opportunity to learn it professionally. After a few years, I moved up to the Orlando area to pursue a job at Discovery Cove in their Aviculture Dept.
My Aviculture position was part-time, so I needed another job (like many others). I was hired at John K9 Dog Training. I since moved to Full Time with John K9 and was with the company for 2.5 years, learning balanced methods of training. And now, I’m starting my own thing to help all of you!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t necessarily say it was a smooth road. Starting my own business isn’t exactly where I saw myself 5 years ago. When I was growing up, I always wanted to be a marine mammal’s trainer. However, different pathways and new skills have brought me to dog training. Once I started in the dog training field, I knew that my passion was taking a new form. I love where this has brought me and where this is going to take me!
