Hidden Gems: Meet Kirstyn Seward of Seward Accounting & Tax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirstyn Seward.

Kirstyn Seward

Hi Kirstyn, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My husband and I were so young and had no life experience yet. We had a two-year-old daughter at home and minimum-wage jobs. We found out that we were pregnant with twin baby girls! This threw a wrench in our plans, yet we were so grateful. Soon after the twins were born and we had three daughters under three years old, we quickly realized that our jobs would not be enough to support our growing family. My husband, Matt, took a leap of faith and went out independently as a landscaper and tree expert. He had had experience in the past and was ready to put it to good use. As time passed, he quickly realized there was a great need in the community for these services. We banded together and were able to make it work. We went door-to-door, offering our services to residents in neighboring cities. We even rented a $25 pushmower from a local shop to satisfy a customer’s request. We did this for a while, and our business grew. Then Covid hit. We had three young girls at home when COVID-19 hit, and everything came to a halt.

I had been pursuing a college degree in accounting on the side, but now everything had an end date. I pushed through my studies and graduated college just as COVID-19 was beginning. I opened a small bookkeeping business from my home to stay home with my girls in 2018, and I decided to put more effort into that since I would need to be home with them anyway. I had a few lingering clients, but it was more of a side hustle than a business. A while later, I was offered an Accountant position at a government agency – my dream job! I come from a wonderful family, but my wonderful family had no financial knowledge. My dream was to retire someday, and I knew that a government job would give me a pension. Not long after getting my dream job, my dreams shifted. We moved into our home in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and decided to put more effort into finance. On December 7, 2022, we launched Seward Accounting & Tax. We did it tired, scared, and empowered! We just celebrated one year of ownership with Seward Accounting & Tax. In our first year, we helped over 200 businesses with the accounting, Bookkeeping, Payroll, Taxes, and Business Advisory Services. We now have four beautiful daughters and are so grateful to our community for allowing us the opportunity to support your businesses. We look forward to many years to come and thank you for choosing us.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In business, like in life, it’s never a smooth road, and it’s not meant to be. If it were easy, everyone would do it and always be done well. One of my biggest struggles is my age and gender in a predominately mature male industry. As a 26-year-old woman with an accounting and tax firm, I’m sometimes looked at as an adolescent. While this is not the case, and I have more than adequate training and capabilities, it can make things difficult.

I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Seward Accounting & Tax?
At Seward Accounting & Tax, we specialize in helping businesses reach their full financial potential through proper bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, taxes, and advisory. We focus on education and communication. Not only do we ensure compliance and comply with regulations, but we see to it that you understand what’s happening along the way and that there are no surprises!

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I grew up in an itty-bitty town in Northern California called Gridley! My family and I lived in a ranch house outside the city limits. When I tell people I am from California, I quickly clarify that I’m not from the surfer part of Cali; I’m from the farmland. My tiny town had around 2,500 residents in total. Everyone knows everyone, knows everyone! I grew up riding my bicycle through mustard flower fields, swimming in ditches, and running wild all summer!
