Lathysha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story began seven years ago, but its roots stretch much further back. In October 1999—just months after welcoming my first child—I started working for a large organization in Central Orlando. Over the next 18 years, I moved through multiple roles, earning promotions and eventually becoming a supervisor. In that position, I took a struggling team and transformed it into one of the strongest, most successful teams in the area.
But in July 2018, everything shifted. I was called into a conference room and unexpectedly told I was being let go, along with several other employees. After nearly two decades of service, I found myself standing at the edge of the unknown.
At first, my plan was simple: go back to school, continue my education, and take my time finding a new opportunity. But when my schooling plans were delayed, I knew God was redirecting me. Instead of waiting for a door to open, I chose to build one. That’s when Simply Semper Travels was born.
What started as a necessity has become my calling.
Today, Simply Semper Travels is not just a travel agency—it is the foundation of my purpose-driven journey. Along the way, God placed another assignment on my heart: to help others shine their light. This calling grew into a ministry focused on reaching people around the world who need encouragement, hope, and a reminder of their God-given identity.
Seven years later, I am not the woman who walked out of that conference room in 2018. I have evolved, grown, and stepped boldly into purpose. Now, I am expanding the vision of my business into a full-on faith-based travel agency—offering meaningful, safe, intentional, and spiritually enriching journeys that reconnect travelers to God, themselves, and each other.
My layoff wasn’t the end of a chapter—it was the beginning of my transformation. And today, I stand as a living reminder that when one door closes, God opens a greater assignment.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My initial challenges in establishing a business stemmed from a lack of foundational knowledge beyond basic business classes, specifically regarding a clear framework and starting point. This necessitated extensive research, effectively utilizing online resources as a self-guided university to gather the necessary information and ensure proper business setup. My journey was marked by significant interest and intentionality.
A crucial resource I discovered was “Score,” an organization dedicated to assisting small business owners. Led by experienced professionals, Score provided invaluable support through workshops, conferences, and presentations. I highly recommend this organization to anyone starting on a new business or nonprofit venture. It is worth noting that I later had the privilege of serving as a guest panel speaker with Score. It is important to acknowledge that not all initial support may come from expected sources like friends or family, as not everyone shares your vision or desires your success. However, you will find individuals who genuinely support your endeavors through their attendance at events and product purchases.
As a business owner, challenges are inevitable, and there will be moments of doubt and the urge to discontinue. However, it is imperative to maintain daily perseverance. The entrepreneurial path can often feel overwhelming and solitary yet pushing forward is essential.
