Marie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Long before I graduated high school, I already knew I wanted to be a licensed massage therapist. After graduating, I applied for a seasonal job at Aeropostale and rubbed my hands together in anticipation of all the money I would make.
It was a 3-week position which would potentially lead to something more permanent. According to my calculations, I was due to make over $300 dollars. The most money I would have ever had. I was going to use my hard earnings to apply to the local massage school. The tuition was only $100 dollars.
After adding the two pay stubs I got from my first job, I had a whopping $87 dollars. Not even enough to pay the tuition. Of the three weeks I was supposed to work they only called me to work for 2 days.
I quickly redirected my sails and decided to join the United States Marine Corps. I would use the opportunity to travel, save the world, and eventually, as I intended, become a massage therapist. Which is exactly what I did. After serving 5 years in the Marine Corps I was able to go to school for free and begin the career of my dreams.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a massage therapist is easy. Being a massage therapist who owns their own business is quite a challenge. The two most important things you must have are perseverance and self-confidence.
Without those two things, you won’t make it very far. This is exactly what I learned the hard way when I opened up my own practice back in 2017. The people I thought would be my biggest help and support group never sent me 1 referral and soon I was paying the rent with my credit cards.
I let the business go and it hibernated for a good 3 years. And now, We’re BACK! The biggest struggle for me was keeping the good fight alive when times were tough. But plants and animals in the desert don’t fall over and die just because it stopped raining for 3 months.
With self-love, perseverance, and willpower I can make my business thrive too.
