Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Ryker.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi I’m Megan Ryker, recently married! Along with traveling, my favorite hobby is offshore fishing and being on the water. I love sharing my hometown with newcomers and what all we have to offer. Our area is truly a coastal gem! My story began 17+ years ago as an insurance agent, but I realized I wanted more for myself and my legacy. I’m self motivated and do my best work solo! Having a background in insurance and working closely with real estate agents on a daily basis, along with owning my own rental home and having purchased multiple homes throughout my life, I had a good background working in the real estate industry. My insurance background has helped me tremendously with navigating my sellers to getting top dollar and my buyers to getting the best deal on a home with some tricks of the trade before making the offer! This is one of my signature niches with real estate is using my insurance knowledge to save my clients money on the front end.
In addition to my insurance background, my primary niche here on the Space Coast is relocating people here from all over the world, helping people buy and sell simultaneously, and marketing properties. This business is all about communication, respect, organization, and diligence. These core fundamentals helped my business launch immediately from the get-go! I’m in the early stages of organizing a coaching business for new agents on how to launch their business without having to “figure it out as they go!” It took me 2+ years to figure out systems, marketing, what works, what is a waste of money, and how to get free leads off social media organically! Real estate is my true passion and that’s how I know I’m right where I need to be!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Real estate is not for the faint at heart. I think I can speak on behalf of most agents when I say one of our biggest struggles is loyalty and no time off. I’ve learned to spend more time upfront educating my clients on how our industry works, explaining the process, how we are paid, and having a system in place to protect my time but also protect my client’s time as well. You’d be surprised how many people don’t realize how we’re paid and that we don’t get paid until they buy or sell. I have worked with some clients for over a year before getting paid. I don’t know many people that could do that so while the real estate business can be extremely rewarding in many aspects such as owning your own business, it can also be like riding a rollercoaster. I would have to say the other struggle most agents can relate to is that we are “on” all the time. Clients texting and calling from the time you wake until you go to bed and all the in between showings, scheduling, marketing, followup, negotiating, building relationships, etc… Most people think realtors have so much free time on their hands and it is quite the opposite! I envy my friends that have weekends off lol. It isn’t for everyone!
With all that said, there are extreme highs and lows in this business. Spending time with clients that don’t respond, spending lots of time with someone without ever getting paid, never knowing where or when our next paycheck will come from, the market shifts, contract negotiations, etc. there are so many highs and lows and you have to learn to ride the waves. You need to understand that you’re having a bad moment or bad day, not a bad career. Our industry stats show 87% of agents quit within the first two years. Most agents either go through their sphere of influence and then realize you have to actually market or find leads, or they can’t handle the highs and lows. It’s not always been a smooth road and lessons learned along the way but having boundaries, systems in place, and sticking to your plan will help dramatically with ensuring your business runs smoothly!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My niche is working with people relocating to and from the Space Coast. I specialize in helping clients buy and sell simultaneously as well. I’ve helped sellers with luxury listings and special strategies for marketing and selling them quicker than the average luxury listing. Exp has helped my business grow in many ways. They offer endless education, support, and most importantly, a community over-competition vibe. It’s helped me grow my personal business with multiple streams of income and the technology is unparalleled. After sharing some of the real estate struggles I’ve experienced, I wanted to create a way for new agents to avoid having to figure it out as they go for two years like I did so I’m developing my coaching program for branding and social marketing for real estate agents. I’m cannot wait to help agents avoid some of those newbie mistakes and to market organically.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Unique Client experiences! If I can give my clients a smooth and enjoyable experience with one of the most financially important decisions they’ll ever make, it brings a sense of satisfaction which branches out from there.
