Hidden Gems: Meet Natalie Julien of Shezenmono

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Julien.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in London England. My father, Japanese, My mother is Irish. We had lots of heavy Japanese culture in my home especially food My first job was in a Thai restaurant. I was quite young, but so into the senses of cooking. The smell of fresh ginger, garlic, especially the aromatics which are heavily Incorporated in what I do today

My father decided to move us all to Japan, and not too long after, my family went back to the UK and I was to stay in Japan and attend an international school in Sapporo.

It was a difficult adjustment at first, but it ended up being one of the greatest experiences of my life. At the school, I had the privilege of meeting students from all over the world. A few years later, I met a family while on a school trip to an American Air Force Base. in Misawa Japan That trip made me want to experience “real” America. It was the coolest experience being in Japan but driving on base and feeling like you were Stateside.

Eventually, I finally moved to the US. My work experience as a culinarian has exposed me to so many opportunities and created lifelong memories, working alongside many great chefs and celebrities.

My family and I would always host dinner parties and during the pandemic, she’zenmono was born. If we can’t go out for a dining experience, then why can’t I bring the dining experience to you. This was a way for me to do what I love.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been a lot of trial and error, my husband has always been my biggest fan, encouraging me to put myself out there. While the pandemic and quarantine has caused so much uncertainty and restricted us from so much of our day-to-day life as we knew it, it was actually the best platform to launch Shezenmono.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Shezenmono ?
Our goal is to bring you a unique dining Hot Pot and/ or hibachi dining experience. In the comfort of your own home.

Especially now, the way we “dine out” has changed immensely. We have become so much more aware of cleanliness, freshness, and safe practices.

Food restrictions and allergies are more common now also.

As the Executive Chef for Shezenmono, I take so much pride in knowing that the fresh foods I prepare and serve have variety, flavor and are prepared and presented in the safest manner.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Launching Shezenmono during the pandemic was a bold move being a food service provider, for our clients, broke up the monotony. Of day-to-day quarantine life. I am willing to take a risk as long as I know that the end result good or bad doesn’t have a negative effect at the end of the day.
