I hail from India, and my journey in the United States began when I moved here to pursue a master’s in aerospace engineering at 22 years old. Alongside my studies, I stumbled upon an online tutoring platform, initially drawn by the prospect of earning some extra income. Little did I know that it would awaken my passion for teaching, something I’d always enjoyed while helping peers back in school.
Even after landing a full-time job post-graduation, I continued tutoring through the online platform. Then, the seismic shift of the Coronavirus pandemic thrust education into the digital realm, magnifying the gap between those with access to private tutoring and those without. This revelation spurred me to action. Drawing on my experience and sensing an opportunity, I founded My Tutor-To-Go, an online platform to bridge this gap by making private tutoring affordable and accessible to all.
Starting an online business was uncharted territory for me, but armed with insights from my tutoring experience and the unwavering support of friends and family, I dove in head first. Fast forward 3 years, and My Tutor-To-Go has already made a significant impact. We take pride in having aided countless students in reaching their academic goals affordably. With a dedicated team of caring and passionate tutors covering everything from Pre-K to college level, we’re committed to our mission of leveling the educational playing field. The success stories of our students, who have not only improved their grades but also regained their confidence in learning, are a true testament to the effectiveness of our approach.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Embarking on something new is rarely a smooth journey, but mine has been about as smooth as it gets. Surrounding myself with the right people and staying receptive to advice was crucial for success. Initially, I grappled with the setback of Plan A not playing out as expected. Accepting that and moving forward was a learning curve for me. Flexibility became key; sometimes, settling for Plan B or even Plan C was necessary. Starting a small business is a whirlwind of decision-making, often on the fly. Six months flew by, from registering the company to hiring our first tutors. It felt like riding a roller coaster, where having a lawyer and an accountant by my side was a must. Fortunately, I had a supportive network of professional women who provided invaluable guidance every step of the way. Once I had their support, I had to consciously relinquish my tendency to micromanage—a habit I’m still refining. Maintaining a robust and user-friendly online platform requires constant investment in technology infrastructure, updates, and security measures to ensure smooth operation and protect user data. What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be spending countless hours reading novels! This is something that is my solace even today. As a kid, I loved reading about these fictional characters, living a life different from mine. I enjoyed being lost in a world of imagination, brought to life merely by someone’s words. I distinctly remember reading The Hunger Games series as a kid, and how it ignited so much passion and courage within me. We had a local bookstore in the town where I grew up and the frequent trips there with my mom, often hours spent reading inside the store is my most fond memory. I believe reading kindled a passion within me that anything can be possible for anyone! This love for reading is what fuels my passion for education and my commitment to making it accessible to all.
