Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Grieb.
Hi Dan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a businessman, I have been blessed to have chosen to serve my community by selling residential real estate. This career choice also gave me the ability to dedicate the time to get my health back at 40 years old. I wanted to be a great business owner and I think I accomplished that, I wanted to be a great husband and father and I think I accomplished that however, I found myself well accomplished in that area and still 300 pounds. I made the decision to get my health in order and set out on a journey to not only get in shape but to stay in shape. I asked the question, “what is a hard event that I would have to train for” and I was told an Ironman. I would have to train for a year to complete an Ironman. So I committed to training for a year then do 10 Ironman events. I completed that goal and looked to see who I could help also become an Ironman. God brought to me a boy with Down Syndrome who I would later help to become the first person with DS to become an Ironman.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With my weight loss, my biggest struggle was the thought that I could not have it all. I had the business, the relationship with my wife, and the relationship with my kids. I felt like I had to give something up to get my health back. I had to overcome the thinking that my opportunities in life were limited.
When it came to training Chris for the Ironman, my biggest struggles were one, I did not have any understanding of DS and the way to interact in this community, and two, the low expectation put on people with disabilities. Just because Chris has a disability and has to learn how to do things differently than me does not mean that he cant do things.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I might be a hard-nosed businessman with big goals and dreams. On the weekends, I might be doing crazy swims, bikes and runs but I am also super sensitive. My favorite movie is the Sound of Music!
