Inspiring Conversations with Rania of Pistil Home and Garden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rania.

Hi Rania, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Hi, thank you for having me! My name is Rania Ata, and I am the founder and co-owner of Pistil Home & Garden LLC. From a young age, I have always been drawn to the realm of retail—particularly its creative and social elements. At the age of twelve, my passions for retail and floral design manifested themselves in a small pop-up shop, which I conducted out of my father’s gas station in St. Croix. Over the course of my thirty-plus years in the retail industry, I grew to become a floral designer by trade and an operational manager. Throughout my career, it was my lasting dream to own a small business, situated in the heart of a tight-knit community. Upon deciding to start a family, I placed my business ventures on the backburner—though my entrepreneurial aspirations remained alive and well. During this period, my passions for home decoration and retail manifested themselves through various outlets, with my previous study of floral design coming into play whenever a family event sprang up. As my youngest daughter grew in both age and independence, I found myself circling back to my long-held dream: creating a retail environment that would inspire and refresh all who entered. Not long afterwards, Pistil Home & Garden LLC was born, operating under the motto “Make, Learn, Grow.” Just as I had claimed an empty space in my father’s gas station years ago, Pistil Home & Garden took root in an established College Park storefront: Atomic Junkies Midcentury Modern Furniture. In 2019, my sister Reem Topel and I subleased a section of the store, and quickly fell in love with our small slice of retail heaven. Even in our limited space, Pistil Home & Garden grew to thrive, with every nook and cranny abounding with thoughtfully curated products. Each new brand underwent an approval process based on the following criteria:

  1. Would I choose this piece for my own home?
  2. Would I be happy receiving this as a gift, even if I wouldn’t seek it out for myself? If I answered “yes” to either of these questions, the product was practically a shoo-in. Before I knew it, Pistil grew beyond where it had been planted; within a year, I was once again on the hunt for a new space, with a second partner by my side: Don Robinson, a retired executive of The Walt Disney Company with extensive hospitality experience. Although my ambitions were lofty, there was no mountain high enough for my family, who were (and continue to be) instrumental in making my dream a reality. From the constant support of my husband and children, to the discovery of our current Windermere location by my stepson and his wife, to its design in the vision of my son-in-law David Whaite, I was supported every step of the way. It is through no small part of theirs that Pistil Home & Garden flourishes where it stands today—a product of lasting efforts and deep-rooted dreams.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Only two weeks after opening our Windermere location, the pandemic gave us no choice but to close our doors. Two days following the closure, I awoke from a nap with the knowledge that something had to be done about our situation. With the help of my youngest daughter, I pursued an online retail model in hopes of keeping our budding business afloat. To supplement this eCommerce outlet, we decided to strengthen our online presence, where we advertised our latest offerings; from curbside pickup and doorstep deliveries to personal shopping via FaceTime, we found ways to remain active in our community. Although our circumstances initially made it seem like “bad luck” was at play, we soon realized that this was merely a road bump on our path to success—a challenge that could only be overcome with grit and determination. Through conducting business online and virtually interacting with customers, we expanded our influence, bringing joy to our community (and fulfillment to ourselves) amidst challenging times. As we fulfilled orders and sent them off to customers from a distance, we were beyond grateful for the support of our community, which banded together to keep our dream alive.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Pistil Home and Garden?

For this reason, our relationships with customers and their families do not begin and end with a transaction; they persist long after the first visit, and encompasses everything from impromptu plant care advice to home design consultations. We value the relationships we build with our customers, as well as our connection with the larger Windermere community. After all, the “growth” element of our motto extends beyond business, as we work to plant the seeds of a thriving community. We invite you to come along for the journey as we continue to make, learn, and grow together!
