Inspiring Conversations with Alexis Gray of Lexs Custom Creations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Gray.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in a family full of creative minds, and that environment shaped me from a very young age. I lived in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and even in elementary school, my mom had me involved in just about every creative outlet you could imagine Steel Band, parades, piano competitions, dance, choir you name it, I did it. Sometimes I had more activities than there were hours in the day! As exhausting as it could be, I absolutely loved it. Looking back, that’s where my creative spark began, even if I didn’t fully realize it at the time.

When I later moved to New York, I continued my passion for the arts diving deeper into music education, dance, and extracurriculars like the drill team. My family attended Bethel Gospel Assembly in Harlem, and it became another space where my creativity was nurtured. My Aunt Darilee, who was both incredibly sweet and impressively stern, played a big role in that. She ran around the church handling everything from events to catering, and as a teenager, I thought she was a little wild for taking on so much. But at the same time, I was inspired by how she brought beauty and purpose to every event she touched.

She could take the most ordinary objects even things others might throw away and turn them into stunning decor pieces for weddings or conventions. Her eye for detail was unmatched. My mom and I would often help her handcraft floral arrangements and curate decor to match specific color palettes, and that’s really where my love for crafting and creating began to take shape.

Over time, that passion evolved into what I do today from digital designs and themed gift baskets to handmade jewelry boxes, custom stethoscopes, and more. Every piece I create is rooted in the creativity I was surrounded by growing up, and I carry that with me in every project.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road and I think that’s true for most people pursuing something meaningful. One of my biggest struggles was figuring out my true place in the world. I constantly found myself asking: What do I really want to do? What should I focus on? What’s the right career path for me? I went through many changes over the years, and at one point, I left it all behind to settle into a “safe” 9-5 job in the corporate world as an administrator.

But deep down, I knew that wouldn’t fulfill me. As time went on, I realized I had to evolve not only in how I saw my work but in how I showed up for it. People aren’t just spending money on a simple basket anymore, especially when they can find one on Amazon in seconds. So I knew I needed to offer something more. That’s when I began creating themed packages that deliver more than just a product they offer an experience, a complete service, something personal and thoughtful that people truly connect with.

And a big part of that transformation meant pushing past my comfort zone. I had to overcome my non-existent social media presence which was a challenge in itself. I realized that if I wanted to reach more people and create real value, I needed to show up online, be visible, and connect with my audience. Learning to navigate social media for me, market my creations, and share my story in an authentic way was a major turning point. I do this for others but what about me?

It wasn’t easy and I’m still learning and growing every day but leaning into those struggles helped me build something real. Something that reflects both my creativity and my commitment to giving people more than they expect.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Lex’s Custom Creations is a creative brand built on passion, purpose, and personalization. We specialize in handmade, custom-crafted gifts and digital designs that bring moments to life. Whether it’s a themed gift basket for a baby shower, handcrafted decor for an event, unique banners, business cards or digital content, every piece is made with intention, love, and an eye for detail that ensures no two items are ever the same.

What truly sets us apart is the experience we offer. We don’t just sell products, we create thoughtful, cohesive packages that tell a story. From the color palette to the finishing touches, each order is curated to reflect the personality, celebration, or sentiment behind it. It’s not just a gift, it’s a memory in the making.

We’re proud to be a business that has evolved with the times. What started as a love for crafting has grown into a brand that values innovation, personalization, and customer connection. We’ve leaned into challenges from figuring out how to stand out in a mass-produced world, to building a social media presence from the ground up all to make Lex’s Custom Creations a name people remember and return to.

Whether you’re celebrating life’s biggest milestones, becoming your own CEO, have a corporate event coming up or just simply want to make someone feel special, we’re here to turn your vision into something beautiful and meaningful. If you’re looking for something thoughtful, custom, and made with care you’ve found the right place.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
When I think about risk-taking, I don’t always picture something huge or dramatic. Sometimes, the biggest risks are the quiet, internal ones, like betting on yourself when you’re not 100% sure how things will turn out. I wouldn’t have always called myself a risk-taker, but looking back, I realize that I’ve taken a lot of leaps that required courage.

One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was deciding to fully pursue Lex’s Custom Creations as a business, not just a hobby. I had to step away from the security of a 9-5 mindset and invest my time, energy, and creativity into something that didn’t come with guarantees. I had moments where I wondered if people would even care about custom baskets and business cards, or if I was “too late” in a world that leans heavily on fast, impersonal shopping.

Another big risk was pushing myself to show up on social media, which was something that didn’t come naturally to me at all. But I knew if I wanted this brand to grow and reach more people, I had to be willing to be seen, to share, and to promote what I create in a real and intentional way. That meant stepping outside my comfort zone, learning how to market myself, and being okay with vulnerability.

To me, risk is necessary for growth. You don’t always have to take the loudest or boldest leap, but you do have to be willing to try, especially when the outcome is uncertain. I believe that’s where the most powerful breakthroughs happen. Every step I’ve taken toward building this brand, even the small ones, has come with some level of risk and every single one has helped me get closer to the creative, fulfilled life I’m building today.
