Inspiring Conversations with Annette Rubin of Vero Building Systems

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annette Rubin.

Hi Annette, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I experienced my first hurricane when I moved from the Pacific Northwest to Northwest Florida. It was a category 5 hurricane that hit 60 miles from my house. Because of how my home was built (category 3 safety standards), it wasn’t safe to stay and ride out the hurricane with my family. Anything above category three and our home would’ve been demolished. As a new mom to a 2-month-old, I was terrified and worried about how I was going to be able to keep my family safe. That’s when I began to realize that communities in Northwest Florida don’t have the housing to be able to withstand natural disasters like that. Not only that but there were many communities affected that didn’t have the extra money or ability to evacuate.

I knew there had to be a way to build structures that were able to withstand all types of disasters. After doing some research I learned about a technology called a structural concrete insulated panel (SCIP). A SCIP panel has a polystyrene core, with double-galvanized steel wire mesh on the outside and shotcrete is either sprayed or poured on top of the steel wire mesh creating a nearly indestructible material. Our panel system can be used to build an entire structure. So that is how Vero Building Systems was created. It came from my desire and concern as a parent to protect my family in a way that could benefit large communities and the people living within them.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have engaged in our fair share of bumps along the way but it was through those circumstances and situations that we learned a tremendous amount and those learnings have helped us shape VERO into the company it is today. The first lesson we learned was to make sure you’re surrounded by the right people that share a common mission and goal. If you have someone on the team that isn’t aligned with the mission and goal, then you will experience a variety of challenges that can negatively impact your business.

Second, the more that I and my team learned about the construction industry, the more we realized that we actually had so much more to learn. Thankfully, we had a board of advisors that had extensive experience in the manufacturing and construction space and personally, I’m a big fan of being a lifelong learner and this was crucial in our ability to turn our business dreams into a reality. Lastly, introducing our (SCIP) building system to the US market is something that requires a lot of education for those that were going to be involved in actually installing our building system. Who’s going to train the crew?

Who’s going to train the subs? Who’s going to install it? As a builder, contractor, or developer, you can’t promise your clients XYZ if you know that your crew doesn’t know how to work with the product. This is what helped move VERO out of traditional methods and into something better. We have built that type of training into our business model. We will offer support and training through the installation; of all of your projects. This will ensure that our clients are able to be satisfied with the finished product that they are able to deliver to THEIR clients.

As you know, we’re big fans of Vero Building Systems. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Vero Building Systems is a US-based building materials manufacturer. We want to be able to bring a better way to build to the US market by veering away from traditional methods and creating products that are not only safer but more cost-effective. With supply chain issues in the construction industry, we wanted to provide a solution that would help mitigate those problems. VERO has the capability to make 17,600 square feet of panels per day in our one plant. This is equal to a 5,600-square-foot residential home. With only 2 raw materials in our panels, this enables the construction process to be a lot faster.

We offer 13 different customizable panels that are able to be specified to your project’s needs. Vero Building Systems is globally recognized as a certified green building system which allows us to make sure that we are not only keeping our families safer but the planet as well. We use steam, natural gas, and no harmful emissions to manufacture our panels. Using our building system will cut down 40 % of Co2 emissions during construction. Our clients are able to feel confident that they are playing a part in a sustainable/safe future.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was one of 5 kids, so there was always a lot going on in our house. I was naturally curious and worked hard at everything I did. I was a competitive gymnast, so resilience is in my bones and I was always good at finding the humor or something positive in any situation.

As a believer in Jesus, He is the guiding light and foundation of what I do and I hope to spread His love and bless families all across North America with our building system.
