Inspiring Conversations with Beverly Merice of Crown of Curls

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Merice

Hi Beverly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born on the beautiful island of Aruba and raised in the Netherlands—a country where straight hair was the standard—I grew up struggling to love my natural hair. With a Caribbean mother who always reminded me that my curls were my crown, I still saw them as wild, untamed, and different. More than anything, I just wanted to fit in.

For years, I tried to tame them, hide them, even change them. But no matter how hard I tried, those curls would always find their way back, reminding me of something I hadn’t fully embraced. It wasn’t until my twenties that I finally looked at my hair and saw it for what it truly was: a part of me, beautiful and unique.

Now, as a mother of two curly-haired girls, my mission is clear: to show them—and everyone I have the privilege of working with—that their natural curls are nothing short of magic. Those big, bold, frizzy curls aren’t something to hide or be ashamed of; they’re something to celebrate.
Each day, as I work with my clients, I’m reminded of the power of embracing what makes us different. The joy of watching someone go from feeling insecure to radiating confidence is one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life. For some, it’s just hair. But for me, it’s so much more. It’s identity. It’s history. It’s a statement of self-love. It’s a way of life.

To every curly-haired soul out there: You are perfect just as you are. Don’t let the world make you think otherwise. Your curls are your crown, and they deserve to shine.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Juggling the roles of business owner, mother, and wife is an ongoing journey filled with beautiful challenges. Running my own business means there’s always something to manage—whether it’s keeping track of inventory, booking appointments, engaging with clients, or creating content for social media. It’s easy to pour my heart into my work, especially when I’m so passionate about what I do. But that same passion makes it tricky to separate work from personal time.

As much as I love what I do, being with my family is just as important to me. The moments spent together, truly present and connected, are priceless. It’s all about finding the balance between my love for my career and the joy I get from being with my loved ones. It’s not always easy, but it’s a beautiful part of this journey.

As you know, we’re big fans of Crown of Curls. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
When I created Crown of Curls, my dream was simple: to help others embrace the beauty of their natural hair. Whether you’re just starting your curly journey or have been on it for years, it’s never too late to join the curly side. Natural hair is an ever-evolving journey—shaped by everything from hormones and stress to lifestyle choices, diet, and the products we use. That’s what makes it so unique! Every client I work with experiences different phases, and it’s a privilege to walk alongside them, guiding them with love and expertise as they discover the magic of their curls.

At Crown of Curls, I don’t just cut and style hair; I build relationships. Over time, you become more than a client—you’re part of a community. Here, you can relax, be free, and embrace your true self. It’s a space where you’re celebrated for who you are, unapologetically. No judgment, just love.

What are your plans for the future?
One day, I dream of expanding and creating a space where natural hairstylists can work together, sharing their passion and expertise to uplift others. I envision a salon where we can not only serve clients but also nurture the next generation of curly-haired kids, with a special area dedicated to them. I envision hosting mommy-and-me sessions, where we can create a salon experience that so many of us didn’t have growing up—fostering confidence and love for their natural curls from a young age.

But for now, I’m focused on the present moment, cherishing every step of this journey. I’m grateful for the growth of my new business, the opportunity to meet amazing new clients, and the relationships I’m building along the way. I’m committed to continually learning, honing my craft, and striving to offer the best experience for every person who walks through my doors. The dream is big, but I’m embracing every beautiful moment of the journey that’s leading me there.
