Inspiring Conversations with Briana Chapman of SocialButterfly Skin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Chapman.

Hi Briana, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello everyone! My name is Briana Chapman, I am a 22-year-old newly Licensed Esthetician who owns a business by the name of “SocialButterfly Skin” that not only preserves the health of the skin but make women feel comfortable and not judged about their beautiful flaws! I specialize in services such Facial treatments which comes in different categories based off of what your skin needs. Not only do I give your skin the love it needs, but I also specialize in Lash Lift & Tints and of course my top service, BODY WAXING! I want to share a little back story of my life and how I got to where I am and hopefully my testimony will help build your confidence into wanting to be a young business owner. It all started when I graduated high school back in 2018. I had my mind made up about what I wanted to be in the future and that was to be a forensic scientist. I started college shortly after and right there and then I knew it wasn’t something I wanted to be for the rest of my life. For two years I was on and off with my schooling until I found the courage to not go back anymore. My mother was furious, I felt like I couldn’t do anything right to make her happy. I started my business first named as “SocialButterfly Minks” where I was selling Mink Lash strips. This was the same year the pandemic started which made things even harder. My business was slowly picking up but I knew I had to do more, I wanted more! That was until I found out about Esthetician school! All my life I dealt with poor acne and hyperpigmentation and not knowing how to properly take care of my skin was very difficult. I was so excited to start school and learn about proper techniques not only for me but for others. August 2021 came and I finally started Esthetician school at Ridge Technical College. My instructors Mrs. P and Mrs. Alex are the best by the way! “SocialButterfly Minks” changed into “SocialButterfly Skin” and business slowly began to change audiences and I just knew this was the path I was destined for. While in school I began to practice at home on close friends and family doing basic facials and waxing. November came and I passed my final exam! I became a Licensed Esthetician! Through all of the hardship I was going through outside of school, I made things work enough for me to finally make a change in my life. A major goal of mine was that by 2022 I wanted my business to have its name official (LLC) and to be in its own location. By the grace of God, that goal was made! I was offered by one of my favorite Estheticians @barebeautystudio_ to come and view a room she had for rent. Immediately I took the offer because this is something I wanted! February 7th, 2022 SocialButterfly Skin officially opened and she has been thriving since! Meeting many beautiful souls and faces everyday not only excites me but it warms my heart that I am able to connect with others that have similar situations and seeing the look of confidence on their face after I work my magic just makes me want to go harder! One thing I can say about starting a business is that things don’t come to you automatically. Being patient and positive with your craft will get you so far because others see that you love what you do! Till this day, I’m still trying to reach certain goals and I know i’ll get to where I want to be in no time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing is ever easy when it comes to starting a business. Confidence was my biggest struggle, I always lacked self confidence growing up and that interfered with me wanting to start my business. With the help of loved ones and even social media friends, I’ve gained so much confidence in myself and of course my work! Deep down I knew I was good at what I specialize in but just trying to remind myself that I shouldn’t be so hard on myself or try to be like others was difficult. Now, I have kind of found my own lane and I love the path that it’s taking me! There’s still room to improve but little by little I see progress in myself. I also had a lot of at home struggles that I still deal with that at one point made me want to give up but it takes an army to knock me down and luckily I’m still standing!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SocialButterfly Skin?
SocialButterfly Skin means being able to stand out and have confidence in one’s own skin. Specializing in facial treatments, body waxing, and lash lift & tints has really made me love my career! Seeing the faces of my clients after I finish every service warms my heart because I did that! SocialButterfly Skin is very popular in body waxing especially Brazilian waxing. With the proper technique, the results are long-lasting and that’s major key for me because we all want positive results. My clients come first always, I do check up texts and offers just for them because building that personal connection should never stop even when they leave the room. Being able to be creative with my marketing and editing skills is amusing to me, because I am my own boss and I can be myself through my post! Monthly I try to do special offers and incorporate fun deals for each of my services, an example I did for the month of March is my “BESTIE BUNDLE WAX” you and your bestie can stop by for a Brazilian wax for only $80! This was by far everyone’s favorite deal. SocialButterfly Skin has very affordable prices as well! I study and refresh my brain almost everyday making sure I have the right material and knowledge especially for my facial treatments. I love educating my clients on products and proper home-care.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Dundee is a small town filled with so many hidden gems, like my business. My area is located right next to Dundee’s police station and has a mini strip where you will find other little shops and boutiques. We’re all supportive and that’s what I love about my area. The building that I share has four beautiful and creative women that also have their own businesses and the atmosphere is amazing because it’s full of women power!
