Chauniqua, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m Chauniqua Major-Louis, the founder of Major’s Project Pop. For more than a decade, I’ve worked in marketing and have had the pleasure of working alongside some of the best chefs in the country. Helping them open restaurants, explore trends, impact communities, and develop products inspired me to do more. This work led to the founding of Major’s Project Pop to satisfy my desire to create a snack that I felt good about feeding my nieces. I have a heart for connecting with people and popcorn is one of the many conduits I use to do so. It’s an honor and privilege to serve you and I look forward to living out our mission of “people and purpose over profit” for the decades to come.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oooh, smooth is definitely not the word. Scaling a business is hard. Up until recently (May 2021), I had a full-time career as a director at a PR agency, which made it very challenging to also balance the business. Funding, staffing, and managing all aspects of the business is definitely challenging. My husband, friends, and food mentors, Nathan and Jenn Clark of Wondermade help keep my head on straight.

Major’s Project Pop is the popcorn you’ve been waiting for. A little sweet, a little salty. All vegan, all good. Major’s Project Pop offers a fresh take on kettle corn using carefully selected ingredients, including a bold, virgin coconut oil that lingers on your palate. Our organic non-GMO kernels are popped in small batches and we keep it real with simple, vegan ingredients – no preservatives here. We use the perfect amount of organic vegan cane sugar and Himalayan pink salt for a light and balanced flavor profile.
We believe that there’s nothing new under the sun, but intention makes the difference. Major’s Project Pop puts people and purpose over profit and that’s why we don’t take shortcuts and only use four simple ingredients. Every batch is popped with care and shipped with love. We do our best to honor the earth and use minimal packaging to lessen our environmental footprint. Last year brought a wave of grief and success for the business. Since then, we’ve partnered with brands ranging from Netflix and Tommy Hilfiger to Calm App and Lionsgate.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Upstate New York. I was a fun and vibrant child. I loved school and all things related to academia and still do. I played basketball and volleyball, ran track, and was a cheerleader. I also worked a lot. My first “job” was flipping candy. At 13, I got my first job at Arby’s, and my working career never stopped.
