Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Comellas.
Hi Edgar, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Float Gang came about during the pandemic of 2020 out of a combination of passion, time, and chemistry. Both my brother and I have businesses that saw and suffered the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this newly found free time, we would chat and dream about what business we could start together if everything was lost. Our combined skills include social media marketing, community building, design, print logistics, project management, and, most importantly, a passion for making it right.
In our youth, we both surfed, skated, longboarded, or tried some board sport. In our recent adult life, we have been users and fans of the Onewheel. An electric self-balancing skateboard with one big wheel in the middle. In our passion and fandom for the device, we quickly found no premium apparel brand dedicated to this lifestyle. After many talks, iterations, and mock-ups, we decided to go with Float Gang. Float is the slang used to describe the feeling of riding a Onewheel Gang; in every city worldwide, there is a gang of Onewheel riders.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In a time where superficial social media metrics act as a measure of success, it is challenging to keep reminding yourself of what matters. In our case, what matters is that we are an engaged part of the community, not just with likes/comments but with personal messages, interactions, and connections. Our weaknesses are only opportunities. Chasing explosive growth without a proper foundation and established grassroots support will only lead to failure, as the customer only sees your brand as a new “fad.”

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Seeing that so many factors had to fall into place for even the concept of this business to start. I can’t say that luck did not play a role. But with that said, if we did not act upon those opportunities and were not still tending to the growth of the business, there’s no luck in that.
