Inspiring Conversations with Grecia Morales of Grey’s Cakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grecia Morales.

Hi Grecia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I found a passion for the culinary arts. It started on my 7th birthday when my mom came up with the idea to make cupcakes and all my friends would decorate their own cupcakes. Since then, I’ve had a love for cakes and cake decorating. Up until now, I have taught myself everything I know now. In 2021, I decided to formulate a plan to start my own business. Finally, in November I was finally open for business. Throughout my work, I have had the pleasure of working with the make-a-wish foundation. It was the biggest privilege I have ever been able to receive. I like to call it one of my greatest achievements since I started my business. Now almost two years into my business I have had the honor of making delicious and beautiful treats for so many amazing people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Owning a business hasn’t always been fruitful. There have been times when I haven’t gotten orders for weeks at a time. There have also been times when money just wasn’t coming in as often as I needed. The times I’ve had to pull all-nighters to fix and finish orders that just don’t seem to work out very well. There have been some hard times yes and even to this day I have some difficulties. But these hardships make me grow and learn the skills I need to continue on as a baker/business owner.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I run a custom cake business. I make all sorts of cakes and treats for the customers who order. Everything is freshly made to order and is created to your liking. I believe that being a business owner at the age of 19 is what really sets me apart. Nowadays I see a lot of younger people like me aspiring to open businesses and are doing so. I had always thought that I had to wait til I had a degree and life figured out to start a business but that’s far from the truth. I am a college student with a cake business. I love helping my customer transform their thoughts and ideas into edible pieces of art. I am very proud of my work entirely. I am very proud of the cakes and desserts I make from flavor to decoration to experience. I would like everyone to know that I don’t just make cakes, but I also make candies and treats for dessert tables for parties, I make different Puerto Rican desserts such as quesitos (sweet cheesy pastries), pastelitos de guayaba (guava pastries), etc. all year round. If you ever need a special treat for a special someone, I hope you’ll think of Grey’s Cakes.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory has to be when I still lived in Puerto Rico. I would spend a lot of time with my grandmothers while my parents worked. My grandma would sit me on the counter and have me stir the pots on the stove or have me add potatoes to the beans or stew she would be making, just making me feel included. This is what truly started my love for cooking in general. Since then, I have always loved being in the kitchen and would ask my mom if I could help cook. I mean by the time I was 10 I was able to make complete meals without any assistance and I can tell you it was pretty good too.
