Inspiring Conversations with Hannah Cairns of Sunrise Bread Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Cairns.

Hi Hannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a long time customer of Sunrise Bread Company I had an immediate love for everything this company had to offer. I drove every single morning to get a granita from middle school until I moved away for college. When word spread that the owners of 20 years were looking to retire, my heart sank, thinking of what would become of my most favorite Titusville hangout. I began emailing the owners to find out what they were thinking of doing with Sunrise. they were in the process of finding a good fit for their “baby.” A few failed attempts with people they thought might be the ones they had kind of lost hope. Tom, one of the original owners emailed me once again after about 6 months of our original conversation and described the dilemma they were in to find the right person. They didn’t want to let their dream die. We decided to meet up. After a few conversations with them it became apparent that I might be the best fit to keep the business alive. We all decided I should quit my 10 year career in teaching and begin training in the bakery to learn every aspect of the business to see if it was a good fit for my future. After training for about a year the original owners moved to Seattle. The rest is history. After 4 years of owning the business my husband and I were finally in a place to buy the building. We just purchased our beautiful 2 story building on Friday!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
HAHAHA is it ever a smooth road when it comes to business. Let me remind you that I am a teacher by trade. Everything I learned came from the old owners. COVID was the real test of what I was made of. I am also a mother of 3 children who were home during COVID while schools were shut down so we definitely had to get creative to make our business successful during that trying time. I would say the last year was one of the hardest things Ive ever had to go through but now coming out of it, I am so much stronger now than I was before.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a bakery and cafe. Offering specialty breakfast and lunch items all served on our homemade bread. We also serve specialty coffees and my favorite Granitas (blended espresso, milk, and sugar.)

What’s next?
Future plans include opening up some kind of drive through in a different location.
