Inspiring Conversations with Isabel Liu of Yimaze Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Liu.

Hi Isabel, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I come from a multicultural background with Taiwanese parents and was raised across 6 other countries: Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Panama, Honduras, Taiwan, and the U.S.A. Due to the nature of my father’s job, we moved every 2-3 years to a different city or country. Although language wasn’t always a barrier wherever we went, I found it difficult at times, feeling like I did not belong anywhere in particular. The instability of our childhood made it challenging for me to communicate and connect with others. However, I always found comfort in creating art as my way to express myself. At a very young age, I noticed art was always a common language despite cultures, age, background, and ethnicity. More importantly, it is timeless. The freedom, self-expression, and authenticity I felt whenever I could express myself through art became the WHY for what I do today. My passion and mission is to give humanity a way to achieve their version of freedom through my artistic talents. That’s when I decided to move to the U.S.A, the land of the free, to pursue my dreams. While my dreams took a turn and morphed into something else, I still ended up on the same path. Today I offer digital marketing services to entrepreneurs and small organizations.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. It was and continues to be a rocky road I’ve managed to pave with the support of my family. In the countries I was raised in, there were not many career choices in the creative field nor the resources to help me explore the options. Luckily, I had supportive parents who told me to follow my heart and gifted me a ticket to America, where art is respected. Although I came here with a dream, it was quickly shattered by reality when my parents told me they can no longer afford my education and need me to find a more realistic career path that can guarantee a job after college. I changed my career path from animator to graphic design and eventually to digital media. I managed to receive scholarships to help offset some costs, worked 2-3 jobs at a time while staying full-time at school, and was highly involved in school clubs so I could ensure a job after college.

With the universe on my side, I landed a job straight out of college as a Marketing Specialist. I was blessed with a manager and mentor who constantly challenged me to grow. That’s when I discovered my love for data as much as art. I discovered the power of marketing and the freedom it gives businesses and the entrepreneurs behind it all.

That’s also when I finally let go of the regret of giving up my “dream” as an animator. I found a new dream. I found my way to modern art that not only gives me but also others the freedom we achieve through our businesses.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Yimaze Designs is a boutique digital marketing firm. I offer entrepreneurs and small organizations a one-stop-shop for all their marketing services. That includes social media management, website design, graphic design, and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

I often joke about being a generalist – a jack of all trades. While many call it a “master of none,” I call it a well-rounded approach. Due to my dabbling in many areas of digital marketing, I am able to see the big picture and marry all the different elements to create a solid strategy for any business. The benefits of offering a mix of these foundational services are the ability to integrate one strategy consistently throughout each channel.

I’m known for quality and professionalism. My passion for helping others achieve their freedom lays the foundation for the relationship between me and my clients. Many of my clients are entrepreneurs chasing their dreams and on a tight budget. I understand my clients may need the option to update their collateral often, manage their own website or social media on their own once I get them started on the right foot. Therefore, I set my clients up for success by building everything on platforms they can easily grasp and educating them along the way. I often record video tutorials for them to follow shall they need to refer back after handing things off. While it isn’t necessarily a specialty, it is the way I do business that sets me apart from others. I care for the success of my clients as my own because I can empathize with them WHY behind their business. I know behind these business ideas lies the freedom they desire. Ultimately, the freedom and flexibility I give my clients is what keeps bringing them back to me.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?

I see our industry becoming more of a DIY industry. Advertising and marketing are becoming more accessible and affordable to the general public through social media. The internet today allows people to outsource their projects overseas for cheaper. Due to the advancement of technology, there are more and more platforms available for entrepreneurs to do everything themselves without the need for much experience or knowledge in the field. The digital marketing industry will become saturated with services that lack the quality that someone with the proper education and experience in this field would be able to provide. With this trend, I’m confident I can still continue to provide value to my clients through my high-quality workmanship and the education piece I bring to them.
