Inspiring Conversations with Jacqueline Montgomery of Healing Horizons 101

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqueline Montgomery

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Healing Horizons 101 began as a passion to help individuals heal from trauma and find hope amid their struggles. My journey started after experiencing firsthand the impact of trauma on my life, and the lives of individuals and their communities. With a background in Christian education, counseling, and personal development coaching, I recognized the need for a holistic approach that combined mental health and spiritual healing.

Through years of training and working in various settings, including with justice impacted and caregivers, I developed a deep understanding of the complexities of trauma recovery. This led me to create Healing Horizons 101, an organization focused on offering Bible-based trauma healing programs, workshops, and facilitator certifications to empower communities.

I’ve seen the transformative power of these programs and have been blessed to witness lives restored through faith, healing, and support. Today, Healing Horizons 101 serves individuals in need of trauma recovery, grief support, mentoring, and life skills, partnering with local community centers to extend its reach and impact. I’m excited to continue this work, knowing the difference it can make in the lives of those who need it most.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. The journey to establish Healing Horizons 101 has been filled with challenges, but each obstacle has contributed to the growth and strength of the organization. One of the early struggles was gaining the necessary support and recognition for the work I felt called to do. There were times when resources were limited, and it was difficult to get others on board with the vision, particularly in underserved communities where trauma healing wasn’t always seen as a priority or an issue.

Another significant challenge was working within systems that are slow to adapt, such as the legal, church, and healthcare sectors. Navigating these areas, especially when working with the justice-impacted, parents of stillborn deaths, or dealing with issues of trauma recovery, required patience, persistence, and a willingness to advocate for the program in ways that were outside of my comfort zone. It frequently involved groups denying the presence of trauma, which necessitated a thorough explanation of what trauma truly is.

There were also personal struggles, as balancing the vision for Healing Horizons with the realities of running a nonprofit, especially with the complexities of fundraising and sustainability, often felt overwhelming. Additionally, I discovered that the program’s biggest challenge was building a strong facilitation team. Despite there being over 16,000 certified facilitators globally, it was challenging to find reliable individuals who had a genuine passion for the work. But through it all, I’ve learned to trust in God’s timing and guidance, and these struggles have only deepened my commitment to the mission.

Despite the difficulties, the rewards have been immeasurable—seeing lives transformed, witnessing individuals heal, and knowing that the work has made a lasting difference has made it all worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Healing Horizons 101, though I believe it’s more about perseverance, faith, and the lessons learned along the way. There have been moments where things fell into place unexpectedly—whether it was the opportunity to connect with a key partner or the timing of a breakthrough in the business. These moments felt like good luck, but I also know they came from staying committed to the mission and keeping my eyes open for opportunities.

On the flip side, there have been challenges and setbacks that seemed like bad luck, but they were also valuable learning experiences. Struggles with funding, the difficulty of finding the right facilitators, and the hurdles of navigating systems have all tested me. But each of these “bad luck” moments led to growth, innovation, and a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed.

Ultimately, I believe luck plays a part, but the real driving force in my life and business has been hard work, faith, and the constant pursuit of making a difference. The lessons learned from both good and bad experiences have shaped the way I approach the work I do now.
