Today we’d like to introduce you to Jakisia Lafortune.
Jakisia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
TheLushBox started as what seemed to be a hobby then eventually turned into my passion. I began my business back in college at Florida A&M University. It was my senior year and although I was a health science major, I hadn’t exactly figured out what I wanted to do as a career. I remember struggling and being depressed with school and bills. I was lost and confused with life itself; It felt as if my brand found me. I remember waking up one day and using the last bit of money I had saved to buy in-store soap-making products, I then passed them around campus and delivered them to dorm rooms for everyone to try. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made for myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
If anyone were to ask where I saw myself five years from now, a business owner wouldn’t have come to mind. I wish I was a bit more knowledgeable when it came to operating a business. It’s definitely a process; there has been a lot of trial and error with products, inventory, as well as managing my funds correctly.
As you know, we’re big fans of TheLushBox. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I create feminine products for woman all over; my goal is to increase self-esteem and confidence in women. I know there’s a lot us women are afraid to talk about even with our physicians, TheLushBox creates that safe place for us to discuss not only skin problems but help to correct them. My very first product is the peppermint yoni bar, it’s also one of my biggest sellers. Many woman enjoy this products due to its minty sensation and fresh feeling. A year from now TheLushBox will have its very own spa to create a more of an in-person experience.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’m very grateful for my business friends, Danielle, Daija, Zarria… They all make sure that I’m on the right track and assist me with any issues I may be confused on. Most of my support comes from my friends they’ve been extremely helpful throughout the process of growing my business and continue to assist me any way possible.
