Inspiring Conversations with Jan-Tore Oevrevik of JTO Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan-Tore Oevrevik

Hi Jan-Tore, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been drawn to the power of storytelling through imagery, and photography became my way of capturing the world’s beauty and unique moments. My journey as a photographer began years ago, sparked by a deep curiosity about different places, cultures, and the essence of landscapes, whether urban or untouched.

Over time, my passion evolved into something far more significant. I focused on honing my craft to create pieces that not only capture a scene but also evoke emotion and tell a story in every detail. My work has taken me across various parts of the world, where I capture diverse landscapes and cityscapes—each with its own character, from serene mountains and rugged coastlines to the architectural charm of cities like Venice and San Francisco. Every place offers something unique, and I strive to bring that essence into my art.

In recent years, I’ve shifted my focus toward not only capturing but also sharing these moments through fine art prints, available in open, limited, and rare editions. These collections cater to a wide range of collectors, from those just starting to experienced art lovers. This shift was partly inspired by the resilience I found during challenging times, including a hurricane that severely damaged my studio. That experience taught me the importance of perseverance and the strength of community support.

Today, my work has earned international recognition, with awards and features in renowned publications. But beyond the accolades, what truly drives me is the impact my art can have on others. Whether it’s creating a calming scene that someone can escape into or capturing a powerful moment that resonates deeply, I’m grateful to share these pieces with others.

I’m also passionate about giving back. Through my photography, I support causes close to my heart, like Teen Challenge. This journey has become more than just a career—it’s a way to forge meaningful connections with people and give back through the art I love.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, as building a career in fine art photography comes with its own unique set of challenges. One of the biggest obstacles has been finding the right audience—those who truly appreciate high-end, fine art prints for their homes or collections. Unlike more accessible artwork found on platforms like Etsy, my prints are in a different league, crafted for a narrower market of collectors who value exclusivity and artistry.

Building trust in my brand is an ongoing process, especially in a competitive space with many talented photographers. Standing out means not only delivering exceptional quality but also connecting with collectors on a deeper level, showing them the thought, technique, and passion that go into each piece. Establishing a reputation in this niche market requires patience and persistence, but each connection I make reinforces the vision I have for my work and the legacy I hope to create.

Another challenge in this journey has been the considerable financial investment required. Landscape and cityscape photography demand high-quality equipment to capture the finest details and dynamic range, and that gear can be quite costly. Beyond the equipment, there’s also the expense of travel—flights, transportation, accommodations, and meals—all add up. Each location I capture often requires extensive planning and investment, as I aim to bring out the unique essence of every place, whether it’s a serene mountain range or the architectural beauty of a historic city.

While these investments are significant, they’re essential to achieving the quality and impact I strive for in my work. Each piece I create reflects that commitment, and I hope that dedication resonates with those who appreciate the art and understand the value behind it.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In my work, risk is an unavoidable part of capturing the beauty of nature. Photography is about seizing moments, and sometimes that means embracing the unknown, especially when it comes to weather conditions. For example, planning a trip to a place like Iceland requires booking flights, hotels, and logistics often a year in advance. Yet, there’s no guarantee that the weather will cooperate once I’m there. I’ve traveled to breathtaking mountains and scenic locations, only to be met with fog or rain that obscures the view entirely, which means lost opportunities, financial setbacks, and having to plan a return trip in hopes of capturing the scene as I envision it.

I’ll sometimes extend my stay, hoping to minimize the risk of missing out on these views, but even that doesn’t guarantee results. While I can capture the beauty of rainy or stormy weather, the highlight of a trip—the iconic scene I traveled to capture—can remain elusive.

Taking risks also involves physical challenges. Whether it’s standing on the edge of a cliff on a dark night to capture the Aurora Borealis or balancing on a narrow mountain ledge in high winds, these moments require overcoming significant personal fear. The goal is always to share the extraordinary beauty of these scenes with the world, capturing images that few can. Each risk, whether environmental, financial, or physical, pushes my creative boundaries and reinforces my commitment to my art.
