Inspiring Conversations with John Crutchfield of SPROUTSTANDING, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Crutchfield.

Hi John, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story is a tale of two very different worlds: the high-stress environment of corporate executive life and the vibrant, healing atmosphere of a vertical farm. For years, I measured success by OKRs, KPIs, and leadership meetings, but the “busy executive” lifestyle eventually took its toll. I was facing significant health issues and realized that in my pursuit of professional success, I had neglected the most important asset I owned…my body.

I needed a transformation, not just a diet. That necessity birthed a passion. I essentially traded the boardroom for the grow room, diving deep into the science of nutrient density. I discovered microgreens (tiny plants with massive nutritional profiles) and they became the cornerstone of my health recovery.

But as any parent knows, adopting a healthy lifestyle is one thing; getting your family on board is another. I had picky eaters at home who weren’t exactly thrilled about eating bowls of salad. That challenge sparked innovation. I began experimenting with ways to sneak these super-nutrients into our everyday meals, which led to the creation of our signature microgreen salt blend. Suddenly, adding a pinch of flavor meant adding a boost of health, and even the kids were asking for more.

That was the moment Sproutstanding evolved from a personal hobby into a mission. I realized that if I could transform my health and get my own family eating better, I could help others do the same.

Today, Sproutstanding is based in St. Cloud, but our reach is nationwide. We focus on breaking down the barriers to nutrition. Whether it’s teaching people to cultivate their own medicine with our home grow kits or shipping our freeze-dried powders to health-conscious customers across the country, our goal is simple: to make the highest quality nutrients accessible to everyone, no matter how busy their lives are.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I hit a fork in the road and it has definitely not been a smooth road. In fact, I often say I traded the predictable stress of the boardroom for the unpredictable chaos of nature.

The biggest struggle initially was the sheer technical learning curve. In the corporate world, if you need a solution, you hire a team or buy software. In a bootstrapped vertical farming business, you are the team. I had to become an engineer, a botanist, and a manufacturing specialist quickly.

Specifically, mastering the preservation of nutrients was a massive hurdle. We didn’t just want to dry herbs; we wanted to freeze-dry them to retain nearly 100% of their nutritional value. That R&D process was grueling operationally. There were plenty of failures where batches didn’t meet our standards, which was painful because we refuse to sell anything that isn’t perfect.

On a personal level, the struggle was also internal. I had to “unlearn” the toxic hustle culture I lived in for years; what I call “empty-calorie work.” Building Sproutstanding required patience. You can’t rush a plant’s growth, and you can’t rush a business that is built on integrity. Learning to slow down and focus on “nutrient-dense” work (actions that actually matter) rather than slide decks and meetings about meetings, was a difficult but necessary transformation.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
What We Do: Sproutstanding is a vertical farm and wellness brand based in St. Cloud, FL, but our mission extends far beyond our local roots. We specialize in making the immense health benefits of microgreens accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or gardening experience. We essentially bridge the gap between “I know I should eat better” and “I actually am eating better.”

Our Specialization & Offerings: We focus on two main pillars:

Education & Empowerment (The Grow Kits): For those who want to connect with their food, we design foolproof home grow kits. We took the complexity out of hydroponics so that anyone can grow nutrient-dense greens on their countertop.

Convenience & Nutrition (Freeze-Dried Lines): We know life is busy (I lived that busy executive life for years!) That’s why we developed freeze-dried microgreen powders and seasoned salt. By using advanced freeze-drying technology, we lock in the nutrients and flavor, allowing customers across the country to sprinkle “health” onto any meal, even for the pickiest eaters.

What Sets Us Apart: What truly differentiates Sproutstanding is the fusion of nature and precision. We don’t just grow plants; we engineer an environment for them to thrive. Coming from a corporate executive and technical background, I apply the same rigor and data-driven focus to our grow room that I used to apply to boardrooms. This ensures that every harvest is consistent, clean, and packed with the maximum possible nutrition. We aren’t just selling a vegetable; we are selling a science-backed tool for better health.

What We Are Most Proud Of: Brand-wise, I am most proud when I hear from parents who use our microgreen salts to get their kids eating vegetables without a fight. It mirrors my own journey with my children. We’ve turned a “health chore” into a “flavor booster.”

What Readers Should Know: We want your readers to know that you don’t need to overhaul your entire life to get healthy. You just need to start small…literally. Whether you visit www.sproutstanding.us to grab a grow kit or a bottle of our Superfood Sea Salt, you are taking a tangible step toward a “nutrient-dense” life.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Redefine “Hard Work”

My biggest piece of advice is to stop measuring your success by your exhaustion. Coming from the corporate world, I was conditioned to believe that “hustle” meant working 16-hour days and answering emails at midnight. I call that “empty-calorie work”…it looks like you’re doing a lot, but it doesn’t actually nourish your business or your life.

Instead, focus on “nutrient-dense work.” Just like the microgreens we grow, you want quality over quantity. Focus on the few actions that actually move the needle for your business and your well-being. If you are starting a business, don’t try to do everything. Try to do the right things.

What I Wish I Knew: I wish I had known earlier that nature cannot be rushed, and neither can a sustainable business. In my executive life, I could often force a result through sheer will or resources. In farming, you can’t shout at a seed to make it grow faster. You have to nurture the environment.

The same applies to building a brand. I spent time early on worrying about scaling fast, when I should have been focused on “growing deep”…building deep connections with my first few customers and perfecting the product. Trust the process, and remember that your health is the one asset you cannot trade in. If you sacrifice your health to build your wealth, you end up spending your wealth to buy back your health.
